About the role

The Department of Space and Climate Physics (Mullard Space Sciece Laboratory, MSSL) at University College London (UCL ) seeks to appoint a highly motivated Research Fellow within MSSL’s Astrophysics Group (

The successful candidate will conduct frontier research on gravitational astrophysics and general relativistic astrophysics, a project funded by the UKRI Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). They will address fundamental questions, concerning the astrophysics of extreme-mass-ratio relativistic binaries, and their gravitational wave and electromagnetic wave signatures, and the covariant transport of radiation and particles from relativistic binaries containing either two unequal mass black holes or one neutron star and one supermassive black hole.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependant upon having been awarded a PhD. If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B £39, - £41, including London Allowance with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis

About you

Applicants must have (or are about to receive) a PhD degree in physics or astrophysics, with focus on gravitational and general relativistic astrophysics. The candidate is required to have a solid track record, in terms of refereed publications, in general relativistic astrophysics of extreme-mass-ratio binaries and gravitational wave sources.

The candidate is also required to have proven experience in high-energy astrophysics research, concerning radiative processes and polarisation.

The candidate is required to have strong analytical and computational skills. Experience in relativistic dynamics of three-body systems is desirable.
