Applications are invited from enthusiastic individuals with a proven background of working in a Cellular Pathology environment, with the associated education and competency, to join this friendly, well-equipped Cellular Pathology department.

The post holder will lead and manage the Immunocytochemistry section within the Cellular Pathology Department, ensuring delivery of a high-quality and efficient diagnostic service. They will act as the technical and scientific expert in Immunocytochemistry, responsible for overseeing the validation, implementation, and maintenance of immunostaining protocols and technologies used in the routine diagnostics.

The post holder will work alongside the wider Cellular Pathology team to fulfil the daily operational requirements of this busy department.They will be educated to an appropriate MSc level or have equivalent experience, and be up to date with developments in their discipline.


Main duties of the job

The successful post holder will section manage and take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Immunocytochemistry section of the Cellular Pathology Laboratory, ensuring delivery of a high-quality, efficient, and responsive service that meets clinical needs.

This includes overseeing the technical and scientific operations of the Immunocytochemistry laboratory, validating and implementing new antibodies and staining protocols, and ensuring compliance with national quality standards and accreditation requirements.

They will be responsible for providing specialist advice to users of the service, evaluating new methodologies, developing, growing and optimising the service, in conjunction with Cellular pathology Service Manager and Consultant staff, with in depth experience and wide understanding and practice of Immunocytochemistry techniques.

They will provide professional, technical and managerial leadership to all staff in Histology and be responsible for training, assessing and ensuring competence, monitoring work practice, in accordance with agreed standards as set by United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) Limited. and jointly responsible for management of staff absence and annual leave.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

48 General Practices (GP surgeries), 49 Dental Practices, 98 Community Pharmacies (chemists), 44 General Ophthalmic Practices (including eye health and low vision services), 38 sites providing mental health and learning disability services, care within your own homes

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.


Job responsibilities

The central Histology laboratory service is situated on the Glangwili Hospital site in Carmarthen with a small satellite team based at the Prince Philip Hospital Llanelli. This role will require the occasional working between sites.The successful candidate will have extensive relevant experience in Histology with significant experience working in laboratories and able to demonstrate relevant CPD in accordance with HCPC.

Person Specification


Qualifications & Knowledge

* BSc Honours Degree (or equivalent) recognised for State Registration
* Registration with Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).
* MSc in Biomedical Science, or equivalent qualification/experience.
* Evidence of ongoing participation in CPD.
* Good knowledge of current professional issues.
* Fellowship of The Institute of Biomedical Science
* Certificate in Supervisory Management


Experience

* In depth experience and wide understanding and practice of Cellular Pathology techniques.
* Evidence of supervisory practice within a laboratory setting.
* Training and experience in IHC and dissection.
* Understanding of complex specialist laboratory techniques


Other

* Ability to travel within geographical area as required.
* Flexible to meet needs of the service
* Welsh speaker (Level 1)
