Locum Consultant Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon

We have an exciting opportunity for a Locum consultant to join the Breast Surgery team at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in the Surgical Oncology Directorate.

Full Time - 10 PAs for 12 months


Main duties of the job

To provide specialist level of care to all patients referred to the Guy's Breast unit with all aspects of Breast disorders / diseases or at increased risk of breast cancer.

The post is a clinical post however the successful candidate should have research and teaching and managerial experience and actively take part in these activities.

The candidate is expected to actively participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and education.

To participate in day to day management of the department.


About us

Each year the Breast Unit at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital treats over 450 new cases of breast cancer. The aspiration of the Unit is to diagnose patients in a timely and sensitive manner and guide them through a seamless pathway with availability state of the art breast surgery, customised reconstruction when necessary and multidisciplinary oncological involvement so that as many as possible are able to participate in randomised trials and clinical research.

Symptomatic cases are derived from One-stop clinics based at Guy's and at UHL (outreach clinics). NHSBSP (screening) cases are assessed at SE London Screening Centre (KCH) or through remote MDMs and then seen by the Guy's Team, given the diagnosis and the treatment is carried out at Guy's. One-stop clinics are supported by our registrars and Advanced Nurse Practitioners. The aim is to assess all referred symptomatic referrals within 10 days and to give cancer cases their definitive diagnosis and treatment plan as swiftly as possible after. To this end there are two multidisciplinary meetings every week, with results clinics being supported by a team of breast care nurses.

Experience in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery is essential as are any additional qualifications in these fields, to support a busy service. A higher research qualification / experience is also desirable to help strengthen the research portfolio.


Job responsibilities

Clinical:

The post holder will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of Breast services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include:

* (a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
* (b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

Teaching:

All consultants are expected to take part in undergraduate teaching during their normal clinical work.

Consultants taking on additional teaching responsibilities will have time allocated for these in their job plan.

Training:

All consultants will be expected to contribute to the training and support of doctors in training, including the role of Educational Supervisor in the educational contracts for junior staff in the specialty. The post holder will also be responsible for the management of the FY2s within the service.

Research:

Consultants are encouraged to become involved in clinical research. Clinical research undertaken as part of the trust research and development programme will be allocated specific time in a consultant's job plan. Consideration will be given to the support required for any research agreed as part of the job plan.

Provide High Quality Care to Patients

* The post holder must be medically/dentally qualified and maintain GMC or GDC specialist registration and hold a license to practice.
* To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
* To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
* To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.


Person Specification


Professional Qualifications

* Full GMC Registration
* Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT


Clinical Experience

* Comprehensive clinical experience in onco‑plastic breast surgery sufficient to undertake independent practice.
* Current core member of a dedicated Breast Surgery team
* Registrar (or above) level experience in onco‑plastic Breast Surgery


Clinical Skills

* A commitment to and evidence of multidisciplinary practice, working with other specialties and intensive care departments in the management of cases.
* A team based approach to care and service management, including appreciation of nursing and therapy roles.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues; clinical and non‑clinical, patients and their carers/relatives.
* Higher Qualification Breast Surgery


Research & Teaching

* Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research and a demonstrable aptitude for participating in department research goals.
* Proven research ability at national level.
* Proven teaching skills and a commitment to the training of junior doctors.
* Publications in the specialist field of Breast Surgery
* Teaching qualification.
* Educational supervisor experience.


Audit, Management & IT

* Track record of clinical governance, management and IT skills.
* Understanding of principles of audit.
* Evidence of understanding of the role of clinical management.
* Extensive service development or quality improvement experience in the NHS
* Experience of medical audit with the field of Breast Surgery.


Other

* Evidence of being a team player
* Record of high level communication skills (ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate)
