Workshop Manager Bedford
To manage, lead, and control both Fitters & Yardpeople in carrying out planned maintenance activities to ensure our plant operates safely and reliably. Maintenance includes PDIs, safety LOLER inspections, servicing, and general damage repairs. The Workshop & Yard Manager is responsible for driving productivity, ensuring rent-ready standards, and maintaining technical excellence in the workshop, including 5S auditing across two workshops.
Role dimensions/KPIs:
* Accountable for workshop productivity, repair, and maintenance of Telehandlers and Roto Telehandlers at pace.
* Supervise a team of Fitters to achieve 'ready for rent' standards in line with R4RV3.
* Maintain machine Average days in service (PDI) 1k).
* Work to metrics to increase workshop productivity and reduce off-hire to rent readiness time.
* Ensure mechanical standards minimize machine breakdowns (1st 7 days < 1.75% KPI).
* Maintain daily technical standards in both workshops.
* Conduct weekly 5S audits and manage tasks for Fitters & Yard staff.
* Support transport operations by sourcing and providing fleet numbers for delivery reports.
Principal Responsibilities:
1. Lead & manage all fleet maintenance activities, planning, assigning, and reviewing work.
2. Allocate workshop jobs/workload efficiently among fitters.
3. Assign yard tasks based on 5S principles and brief DFD machine wash requirements.
4. Ensure machinery is fit for hire, turning around machines quickly and accurately.
5. Coach and mentor the fitter team to ensure competence, efficiency, and proper behavior.
6. Manage stock levels in the workshop store to ensure readiness for PDI.
7. Promote Health and Safety throughout the depot in line with 5S.
8. React promptly to delivery reports, planning proactively to avoid delays.
9. Ensure compliance with contract and customer specifications, including thorough examinations, PDI, and servicing.
10. Liaise with Depot Manager and National Operations Manager to maximize fleet availability.
11. Perform ad hoc duties as required and deputize for the Depot Manager when absent.
The Person
Essential:
* Recognized industry qualification (City & Guilds/NVQ 2/3 in Plant Maintenance).
* Full and varied knowledge of plant machinery.
* Proven experience in plant vehicle repairs with analytical problem-solving skills.
* Customer focus and service awareness.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Exceptional team player and organizational skills.
* Basic computer skills.
* Ability to delegate and influence staff robustly.
* Excellent numeracy and literacy skills.
* Full, valid driving license with no more than 3 points.
Desirable:
* Supervisory and management qualifications.
* CSCS Card.
* Experience with continuous improvement, particularly 5S.
Hours are 52.5 per week (06:00 – 17:00, Mon – Fri).
