We invite you to come and lead the Children's Outpatients Department as the Ward Leader at Princess Royal University Hospital.

This job description is intended as a guide to the general scope of duties and is subject to revision in consultation with the post holder.


Responsibilities

* Day to day management of the service in Children’s Outpatients
* Ensuring the nursing care delivered is of a high standard
* Appropriate and effective utilisation of human and physical resources
* Demonstration of effective leadership and motivation of staff
* Delivery of nurse led services and clinics as the service demands
* To have advanced holistic patient assessment skills so that clinical decision making leads to prompt and appropriate action in the best interests of patient’s well-being
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills so that professional advice or care guidance instructions are well understood by patients, their relatives and/or carers, and members of the multidisciplinary team
* Ensures continuity of patient care through effective staff deployment
* Ensures good discharge planning so that individual patient’s needs are met with an appropriate plan of action and involving the multi-professional team as required
* Regularly checks patient care documentation to ensure care has been considered and an appropriate care plan exists
* To work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and Trust Policies and Procedures
* Communicates effectively with patients and their carers; colleagues and students
* Works effectively as part of the multi-professional, inter-disciplinary team
* Is clinically and professionally up-to-date with current trends and developments in the clinical speciality
* Functions as an effective role model in the clinical setting, advising and supporting the multidisciplinary team
* Facilitates the cascade of information supporting staff discussion and feedback
* Supports ward teams through regularly working clinical shifts including long day shifts
* Ensures compliance with the Trust’s Equality and Diversity Policy and equality of opportunity for disabled people
* Has full knowledge of the Trust’s Major Incident Plan and safeguarding policies
* Collaborates with the Practice Development Nurse for staff education and development
* Manages budgets for allocated education and staff training
* Contributes to a good quality clinical learning environment for students and continuing professional development
* Participates in Trust approved research studies and keeps relevant colleagues informed


Management

* Facilitates and supports nurses in working with the multi-disciplinary team
* Adopts an appropriate management style
* Deploys nursing staff and resources, reviews duty rosters, and negotiates skill mix levels
* Works with Human Resources on HR issues
* Keeps the Matron/Head of Nursing informed of incidents and complaints
* Plans service development and improvement with senior colleagues
* Performs annual appraisals and supports staff development
* Provides strong leadership, delegates appropriately, and supports staff to develop
* Maintains effective staff communications and participates in ward meetings
* Supports recruitment and retention efforts
* Ensures confidentiality of patient records at ward/departmental level
* Participates in quality audits and ensures feedback leads to action
* Manages the ward budget to maximise resources and reduce waste
* Acts up in suitable roles to meet service needs and supports change management
* Investigates complaints and adverse incidents with appropriate follow-up
* Ensures Health and Safety compliance
* Informs staff of Trust policies and procedures and ensures compliance


Personal and Professional Development

* Annual appraisal and Personal Development Plan
* Active member of the Ward Managers Forum
* Reflects on practice and maintains a personal learning portfolio
* Works with Trust standards on nursing skills and competences
* Works towards achieving Care Group Competency in oral drug administration and related training
* Undertakes in-house training as required


People Management and Performance

* Lead, coach and manage team performance with emphasis on excellence and addressing underperformance
* Ensure regular performance appraisals and clear objectives
* Ensure statutory and mandatory training compliance
* Manage team absences and maintain productivity
* Identify talent and support succession planning
* Review skill mix and keep job descriptions up to date
* Promote team wellbeing and a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and harassment


General

* Duty of care for health, safety and well-being of staff, patients and visitors
* Observe rules and policies of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and statutory obligations
* Promote an inclusive, respectful environment
* Maintain confidentiality of personal information
