Are you an experienced Principal Designer or CDM Manager looking for a role where you can make a real impact on construction safety and compliance? Mitie is hiring a CDM Lead to join our Projects Professional Services team, supporting a wide range of government and commercial projects valued between ÂŁ250k and ÂŁ5m+.
This is a hands-on, strategic role where you’ll be responsible for ensuring CDM 2015 compliance, managing health and safety risks, and supporting project teams from early design stages through to completion and handover.
🔧 What You’ll Be Doing
* Lead CDM and Principal Designer responsibilities across multiple projects, ensuring legal duties are met under CDM 2015.
* Plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate health and safety during the pre-construction phase, and support safety throughout the construction phase.
* Provide expert advice across all RIBA stages—from initial enquiry and design development to tendering, mobilisation, delivery, and handover.
* Act as a key point of contact for clients, designers, consultants, and contractors, ensuring everyone understands and fulfils their CDM responsibilities.
* Support the development and review of Construction Phase Plans, Risk Assessments, and Method Statements.
* Conduct site visits to identify hazards, review compliance, and ensure health and safety risks are properly managed and documented.
* Compile and maintain Health & Safety Files, ensuring they are delivered in the correct format and within agreed timescales.
* Deliver CDM-related training and workshops to internal teams and external stakeholders.
* Collaborate with HSE, quality, and audit teams to align with Mitie’s policies and procedures.
* Monitor project-related incidents and contribute to internal reporting and improvement initiatives.
✅ What We’re Looking For
* Minimum 3 years’ experience in a Principal Designer or CDM Manager role.
* Strong working knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations and construction health & safety legislation.
* NEBOSH Construction Certificate, General Certificate, or equivalent QHSE qualification.
* APS membership (IMaPS) and a professional qualification in design or engineering (desirable or willing to work towards).
* Experience working on both public and private sector construction projects.
* Knowledge of specialist areas such as asbestos, temporary works, fire safety, confined spaces, and demolition is a plus.
* Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities.
* UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites.
