SEMH Learning Support Assistant
Location: Teesside
We are seeking a committed and empathetic SEMH Learning Support Assistant to work within a specialist SEMH setting in Teesside, supporting children and young people aged 5–11. This position is ideal for individuals with experience in SEMH, alternative provision or care settings, as well as those looking to progress their career in specialist education.
You will be part of a nurturing and inclusive school community where emotional wellbeing, consistency and positive relationships are central to daily practice. The school offers a structured environment and personalised approaches to help pupils overcome barriers to learning and re-engage with education.
This role offers the chance to make a meaningful difference to pupils who require understanding, stability and encouragement to thrive.
Key Responsibilities
1. Deliver targeted 1:1 and small-group interventions for pupils with SEMH needs
2. Promote emotional regulation and positive behaviour using trauma-aware and restorative practices
3. Work alongside teaching staff to adapt learning activities to meet individual needs
4. Contribute to a safe, calm and well-structured classroom environment
5. Follow and contribute to behaviour plans, risk assessments and individual education plans
6. Develop positive, trusting relationships to encourage engagement and progress
7. Liaise effectively with staff teams, families and external professionals
Essential Requirements
8. Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH or behavioural needs
9. Experience within care or support settings (desirable but not essential)
10. A patient, resilient and calm approach
11. Understanding of behaviour management and de-escalation techniques
12. Strong communication and teamwork skills
13. A genuine commitment to supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs
