Senior Nurse Surgical Division Theatres and Peri-operative Medicine

This post is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual with extensive theatre and perioperative nursing experience and leadership skills, who is highly motivated, energetic and driven. Job Summary

The post holder will work collaboratively with the Divisional Triumvirate teams and Director of Nursing, and will professionally and clinically support the nursing workforce for allocated service areas. You will be responsible for the provision of safe, quality and effective services, and day‑to‑day operational management of the services within your remit. You will ensure the Theatre and Peri‑operative Medicine services provide the highest standards of professional practice, budgetary and performance management, and service improvement at all times, driving quality to ensure outstanding patient care is at the heart of all we do.

We are seeking to recruit an inspirational leader with the ability to provide strategic vision, clinical expertise and the ability to direct and influence change, and to develop and support the operational and strategic portfolio. You will possess a demonstrable record of success in change management, service improvement and reduction of harm.


Main duties of the job

* Provide forward‑thinking clinical and professional leadership to nursing staff at all levels within their service group, ensuring nursing care is delivered to a high standard and nursing resource is managed effectively.
* Contribute to the ongoing implementation of the nursing and midwifery strategy, ensuring achievements of all objectives and proactively modernising nursing roles in accordance with patient needs.
* Undertake key functions of the Modern Matron role to ensure the patient experience in wards/departments is of the highest possible standard, with particular emphasis on dignity and compassion.
* Work in partnership with the Service Clinical Director and Service General Manager to develop the services strategic direction and policy framework, ensuring effective governance arrangements are implemented and maintained.

Person Specification


Essential – Experience

* Experience working in a senior nursing role (8a or above) in a Theatre & Peri‑Operative environment.
* Evidence of managerial responsibilities and operational experience in an acute setting, including supervision of staff, students and HR issues.
* Ability to analyse complex problems and develop practical solutions.
* Ability to think and plan strategically, tactically and creatively, prioritising work programmes amid competing demands.
* Ability to manage and deliver to deadlines within resources.
* Significant financial and budgetary management, with evidence of contributing to cost improvement programmes.


Essential – Skills

* Able to evaluate and be critical of self.
* Extensive, complex staff management experience.
* Ability to initiate and implement large‑scale change.
* Good analytical and organisational ability.
* Demonstrates strong leadership skills.
* Ability to influence and facilitate MDT working.
* Effective problem‑solving and QI skills.
* Awareness of developments in the NHS and service delivery.
* Involved in bringing about change to a service/department.
* Experience of implementing evidence‑based practice.


Essential – Knowledge

* Extensive clinical and managerial knowledge and experience in Perioperative and/or Critical Care settings.
* Knowledge of change management processes.


Essential – Qualifications

* Relevant teaching/mentoring qualification.
* Evidence of continued professional development.
* Leadership course/development programme.


Desirable

* Formal recognised Management/Leadership qualification.
* Masters degree or equivalent in related subject (or on a Masters level programme).


Other

* Able to generate new ideas to develop and improve services.
* Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service.
* Ability to motivate and influence others.
