Overview
The Cellular and Molecular Department at the RNOH has had UKAS accreditation since 2017 (number 8680). It supports the Robert Jones Agnes Hunt NHS Trust (RJAH) through a hybrid diagnostic model and provides second opinions and support to NHS Trusts in musculoskeletal pathology. The department works under SLAs with Northwest London Pathology and Swansea University Hospital and frequently receives referrals for second opinions. The postholder will join a team of histopathology consultants responsible for in-house and referred case reports, with reporting guided by clinical information and available ancillary tests.
Main duties
The consultant will:
* Provide pathology reports on in-house and referred specimens, interpreting microscopic features with gross and radiological findings and applying appropriate ancillary tests (immunohistochemistry, FISH, PCR, and next generation sequencing).
* Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and continuing professional development.
* Participate in department management, MDT attendance, monthly meetings, and academic responsibilities as allocated.
* Contribute to the RJAH SLA and other SLAs, including rota participation and occasional travel and overnight stays for RJAH and related MDTs.
* Support whole genome sequencing pathways for sarcomas, including involvement with paediatric/young adult pathways where applicable.
* Engage in 20% of the job plan for research and development, including ethical review processes and Biobank support as required and funded by external researchers.
* Maintain high clinical standards in Cellular and Molecular Pathology and fulfil responsibilities related to histopathology.

The postholder will be expected to maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of Cellular and Molecular Pathology and to undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility related to histopathology. They will be actively involved in department management, MDT attendance, and monthly meetings, and will support clinical governance activities, audits, CPD, and annual job planning with the Clinical Director. They will be expected to work on site unless otherwise negotiated with the clinical lead and to contribute to the RJAH SLA and other SLAs, including rota duties and potential travel. Whole genome sequencing is provided as standard for some sarcomas, and the postholder will support this pathway. The role includes 20% of the job plan dedicated to research and development and ongoing support for ethical processes and Biobank-related activities as funded externally.
Person Specification
Skills
* Essential: Competent in all aspects of skills appropriate to the role; excellent verbal and written communication.
Desirable: Experience in training/teaching nursing and medical staff.
Knowledge
* Essential: Understanding of clinical governance; awareness of GMC good medical practice, appraisal and revalidation.
Qualifications
* Essential: MBBS or equivalent; MB FRCPath or equivalent; full GMC registration; full and Specialist registration with CCT or equivalent.
* Desirable: MD/PhD involving medical research.
