Who we are: The Grace Eyre Foundation is a charity based in Brighton & Hove and the wider Sussex community that has been working with people with a Learning Disability and autistic people since 1898. Our mission is to work towards being led by people with Learning Disabilities and autistic people to deliver high-quality housing, support and activities in their local communities. The people we support tell us that they want “good support from kind and friendly people” – so that is what we are looking for! Introduction to the role: Travel Buddy is a Grace Eyre project that supports people with a learning disability and/or autistic people to travel safely and independently. To learn more, please visit grace eyre travel buddy youtube – Google Search Grace Eyre is recruiting a Travel Buddy Worker to help deliver and grow the Travel Buddy programme in West Sussex. We are looking for individuals who feel confident using public transport themselves, and who can support others to travel safely and independently on planned routes using both buses and trains. Travel Buddy Workers also play an important role in delivering Travel Training Drama workshops (Drama on the Bus), Safety and Accessibility workshops (Try a Train), and Confident Traveller workshops. These sessions are delivered in a range of settings, including schools, colleges, and partner organisations such as other social care charities. As we expand into West Sussex, we are specifically looking for someone based in West Sussex who feels confident travelling across the county using public transport. This is a rewarding and engaging role where you will see first-hand the positive impact of your work. The role is part-time and requires some flexibility — for example, supporting morning journeys to college or work placements. Travel Buddy operates across both West Sussex and Brighton & Hove. Brief outline of the role: The Travel Buddy Project is eager to expand into West Sussex, and we are already seeing a growing number of referrals for both 1:1 travel training and workshops across the county. You will be based in West Sussex and confident travelling across the county using public transport. Travel time and travel expenses will be fully respected. You will need to be able to engage with a wide variety of people with different support needs, building positive rapport to help deliver effective travel training that works towards independence. Strong organisational skills are important, as you will be planning your own day and maintaining regular communication with your team. A key part of this role involves working directly with individuals to help them develop independence and confidence in using public transport. This means you must feel confident navigating public transport yourself, including knowing what to do when things don’t go to plan (e.g., cancelled buses). There may also be opportunities to support the delivery of workshops on travel safety. This requires you to feel comfortable speaking to others — either one-to-one or in small groups. You will always receive appropriate notice for these sessions. Good IT and/or administrative skills are desirable. To support you in all aspects of the role, you will receive a full induction and a clear outline of responsibilities. Your team will also be available to provide support on the day — whether by phone or in person. If you wish to have an informal chat about the role (before applying for the role), please contact Shaun Washington-Doyle – swashington@grace-eyre.org Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: No applicant for employment or employee will be treated less favourably than another on grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, gender, sexual orientation, marriage & civil partnership or pregnancy & maternity, and we encourage applications from people with learning disabilities or identify with being on the autistic spectrum/neurodiverse. Staff benefits include: Enhanced holiday entitlement One paid celebration day a year Cost of living support package such as rental deposit scheme Cycle to work scheme Generous refer-a-friend scheme One paid volunteering day a year Enhanced sick pay Enhanced employer pension contribution Enhanced death in service Training and development opportunities Flexible working opportunities Electric Vehicle Scheme We are also: Accredited as a Disability Confident Leader Accredited as an Investors in People employer Successful applicants will be required to provide details of 2 referees.
