Job Description:

Job overview

The Deputy Nurse Manager for the Outpatient Ophthalmology Department will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, aligning with the Trust’s Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery. Working alongside the Nurse Manager, the post holder will help lead and manage the clinical area, deputising in the Nurse Manager’s absence. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, while supporting staff recruitment, appraisals, and the development of the service. The Deputy Nurse Manager will ensure the efficient use of resources, maintain a learning environment, and promote health education for patients and families. The post holder will be trained to develop the necessary competencies to safely administer injections and manage ophthalmic conditions. The role includes administering intravitreal injections for conditions such as AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion, and assisting with nurse-led clinics including the Nurse Post Op cataracts clinics and nurse-led fluorescein clinic and diagnostics. The post holder will model excellent clinical practice, lead audit, research, and innovation, and support the development of nurse-led services in collaboration with the wider ophthalmology team.

Main duties of the job

The role entails providing clinical leadership and management in partnership with the Nurse Manager in the Ophthalmology Outpatients Department. The post holder is responsible for achieving clinical objectives, deputising in the Nurse Manager's absence, and performing advanced procedures such as intravitreal injections and post-operative assessments once trained. Duties include supporting consultants during clinics, assisting in diagnostic procedures, and managing patient care outcomes with thorough documentation. The role involves running nurse-led clinics, identifying and escalating post-operative complications, and delivering patient education. Collaborative multidisciplinary work, case management, and the development of treatment plans are key aspects. The nurse ensures compliance with clinical governance, safe medication administration under NMC and Trust guidelines, and safeguarding practices. Proficiency in IV therapy, cannula care, and patient management is essential. The role also includes maintaining accurate EPR records, promoting patient safety, and upholding UHSussex NHS Foundation Trust values while ensuring all practices are evidence-based and policy-aligned.
