About the Role
Total Staff are recruiting for a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer to join a flagship high-volume manufacturing site in Needham.
This is a dual-discipline role covering both mechanical and electrical maintenance across a busy, automated production facility. The site runs a wide range of heavy-duty machinery, conveyors, automated nailers, saw lines, compressors, and handling systems - so engineers need to be comfortable working across both mechanical components and electrical control systems.
The split is roughly 60% mechanical / 40% electrical, making this role ideal for someone who's hands-on with mechanical systems but also confident in electrical diagnostics, fault-finding, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical :
Carry out PPM, reactive, and breakdown maintenance on conveyors, chains, drive systems, gearboxes, shafts, and bearings
Repair/replace worn mechanical parts including belts, sprockets, couplings, seals, and hydraulic lines
Maintain compressors, pumps, pneumatics, and lubrication systems
Mechanical alignment, fitting, and rebuilds on heavy-duty production machinery
Electrical :
Electrical fault-finding on three-phase motors, drives, contactors, and control panels
Inspect and maintain sensors, proximity switches, photoelectric and laser alignment systems
Diagnose issues on electrical wiring, isolators, relays, and distribution boards
Work with variable speed drives (VSDs), inverters, and starters
Carry out electrical isolations and testing in line with company safety standards
Assist with basic PLC fault diagnosis (full programming knowledge not required, but ability to identify input/output issues is expected)
Ensure all electrical work is carried out to 17th/18th Edition Wiring Regulations standards
General Duties:
Support with machinery installation, relocation, and commissioning projects
Keep accurate maintenance records (mechanical & electrical)
Collaborate with production to improve reliability and reduce downtime
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives across the site
What We're Looking For
Proven background as a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Strong mechanical experience (conveyors, chains, gearboxes, pneumatics, hydraulics, compressors)
Solid electrical knowledge - three-phase motors, fault-finding, drives, sensors, panels
Familiarity with automation equipment, safety circuits, and PLC-controlled machinery
Confident in both diagnosing faults and carrying out hands-on repairs
Ability to read both mechanical drawings and electrical schematics
A proactive problem-solver who thrives in a high-volume environment
Must hold a recognised engineering qualification - NVQ Level 3 or above (Mechanical/Electrical)
18th Edition Wiring Regs highly desirable
What's On Offer
£44,800 base salary
OTE earnings of £46,500-£47,000 with shift uplifts (10% paid for hours worked 6-7am and 7-10pm)
Permanent, full-time role - Monday to Friday only
Rotating shifts: 6am-2pm / 2pm-10pm
Specialist training and development after probation
Long-term progression opportunities across a large, stable group
