Clinical Fellow (ST3+) in Stroke Medicine
Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton is a successful and progressive District General Hospital, the largest in Somerset, with an excellent reputation for providing a comprehensive range of medical, surgical and specialist services.
We are looking for a clinical fellow doctor (registrar level) in stroke medicine at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Part time applications will also be considered. The post is intended to provide support to the acute stroke service including hyperacute and acute stroke management and attending rapid access stroke clinics.
Main duties of the job
* Support to the hyperacute stroke unit (HASU) and acute stroke unit: attending consultant ward rounds and conducting own ward rounds
* Providing leadership to resident doctors on the stroke unit
* Attending stroke thrombolysis calls and referrals: gain experience and training in the hyperacute management of stroke, including interpretation of CT brain, CT angiogram and CT perfusion imaging as well as MRI imaging.
* Attending rapid access stroke clinics
* May have some commitment to the GIM on call rota – this can be negotiated according to training needs of the successful postholder and the other registrars.
* Where possible, the post holder may have the opportunity to attend specialist clinics such as spasticity management clinics and stroke follow‑up clinics.

Job responsibilities
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust provides the following stroke services:
* Hyperacute and acute stroke care including 7-day HASU ward rounds
* 24/7 stroke thrombolysis supported by the AGWS stroke telemedicine network, including 24/7 pathway for stroke thrombectomy in Bristol Southmead Hospital
* 7-day TIA clinics with dedicated slots for MRI brain and carotid imaging
* Outpatient stroke follow‑up and spasticity clinics
* Stroke rehabilitation in Williton Community Hospital (18-bed stroke recovery unit) and South Petherton Community Hospital (16-bed stroke recovery unit) and award‑winning county‑wide Early Supported Discharge (ESD) service
* Stroke Research: broad portfolio of multi‑centre research trials across hyperacute & acute stroke care, and rehabilitation, as part of South‑West Stroke Research network
Qualifications
* MBChB or equivalent
* Full registration and licence to practice with GMC
* MRCP
* BSc or BA / other higher degree
Experience
* A minimum of 2 years full‑time hospital service in FY2/ST1/2 or higher grade, including at least 2 years’ experience on a general medical training programme
* Able to carry out the duties described in the job description
* 2 years’ experience of working in the NHS in a paid role.
* Appropriate levels of clinical knowledge
* Basic understanding of stroke, neurological disease, and common general medical conditions
* Shows awareness of own limitations
* Clear, logical thought processes displaying an analytical/scientific approach
* Experience in stroke medicine
* Experience at Specialist Registrar grade
* Teaching of junior medical staff, nursing staff
