Job Title: Business and Development Manager
Location: Remote working plus in-person meetings and administrative duties at Playgroup (Holy Corner, Edinburgh)
Wage: £12.60 per hour, reviewed in line within regular organisational pay reviews
Hours: Base hours for the position are 12 hrs per week up to a maximum of 16 hrs per week with the requirement to attend staff and committee meetings within this.

We have been providing drop-off childcare for up to 24 children aged between 2 and 5 years and up to a maximum of 20 attend morning sessions Monday to Friday. The Playgroup is managed by an elected parent committee who work collaboratively with the Early Years Practitioner team to provide a high-quality space for children to play, experience life outside the home, and make friends. Children follow their interests in an environment that is creative, challenging, safe and varied. We are committed to up-to-date concepts of childhood, children’s rights and the value of play. The Playgroup employs a Manager, Early Years Practitioners and a Business & Development Manager. The Business and Development manager is directly accountable to the Management Committee.
The Playgroup is registered with the Scottish Care Inspectorate (Care Inspectorate, 2015) and is a Partner Provider with City of Edinburgh Council, and a member of Early Years Scotland. We offer a wide variety of activities in a child-led approach in line with the national guidance 'Realising the Ambition' (2020) and a child-led curriculum with reference to the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Business and Development Manager’s overall responsibility is to support the playgroup staff and parent committee to ensure the efficient running and financial security of the playgroup.
HOURS OF WORK
Playgroup operates from 8.55am to 12.20pm Monday to Thursday, and 8.55am to 11.35am on a Friday, following the school academic calendar. There are also regular meetings and occasional events to attend. A percentage of your working hours should be done within playgroup hours and on at least two set days.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Committee
Help the Committee understand how the playgroup operates, including its financial model and committee roles
Ensure regular committee meetings are held and minutes shared with parents who cannot attend
Developing fundraising ideas, building on the annual events and initiatives established by previous committees
Assist with grant applications
Support recruitment processes, including PVG and SSSC checks, and ensure safer recruitment guidelines are followed
Playgroup Operations
Liaise with the Playgroup Manager and staff on admin tasks and committee communications
Manage invoicing, fees reconciliation, and the full enrolment process
Coordinate the parent newsletter
Assist with Care Inspectorate (CI) returns and annual review of policies, HR, and staffing, inline with updates from the CI or other statutory bodies
Maintain and update website content
Oversee purchasing of resources and staff reimbursements
Manage staff mobile contracts and printer subscriptions
Administration & Compliance
Act as key contact for the Church, Care Inspectorate, Edinburgh Council, and Early Years Scotland (EYS) regarding funding, contracts, staff training, and any related queries
Complete CI eForms with the Playgroup Manager
Serve as the main PVG signatory
Update legal policies and renew registrations, insurance, and memberships
Financial Management
Manage the playgroup bank account, payroll, and bookkeeping (QuickBooks)
Liaise with the accountant and provide information for annual accounts
Monitor the playgroup’s financial health and keep staff and committee informed
Organisational Development
Lead on change management, supporting continuous improvement in systems, culture, and processes
Oversee the continued transition to centralised, modern data management and IT systems
Ensure GDPR compliance and secure archiving of records

Start Date:
Upon successful completion of a PVG check with ad hoc training in the first instance, to be arranged with the current BDM. Earliest start date Dec 1st, latest Jan 5th.
