We are seeking a highly skilled Estates Discipline Manager (Mechanical or Electrical) to provide operational and strategic leadership across our Estates services.
This Band 7 role is critical to ensuring the safe, compliant and effective delivery of mechanical or electrical estates services across all Trust sites. The post holder will manage staff, budgets, contracts, service level agreements and compliance within their discipline, while acting as a senior / primary Authorised Person (AP) in two disciplines.
The role requires strong leadership, sound technical knowledge, and the ability to work collaboratively across clinical, non-clinical and external stakeholders to support patient care and the Trust’s operational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Provide overall management and leadership of estates staff within the mechanical or electrical discipline, ensuring adherence to Trust policies, procedures, and wellbeing requirements
Oversee training, development and career progression for apprentices, craftspersons, technicians and works officers (Bands 2–6)
Manage discipline-specific budgets, contracts and suppliers, including forecasting, spend monitoring, SLA, KPI and quality management
Lead and manage service level agreements with internal customers, ensuring performance reviews, corrective actions and escalation where required
Undertake effective resource planning in collaboration with Estates senior management, Finance, Procurement, HR and Business Management teams
Act as Authorised Person (AP) in two disciplines, fulfilling all statutory and governance responsibilities associated with the role
Support capital projects by contributing to specifications, quality assessments, technical advice and delivery assurance
Maintain and improve departmental processes and procedures, driving change where required
Interpret and produce technical drawings, schematics, installation plans and O&M documentation
Ensure estates services comply with all relevant legislation, regulations and safety standards, including risk assessments and training requirements
Maintain and update the backlog maintenance risk register
Undertake Clerk of Works duties where required, or ensure effective quality assurance through inspections and audits
Recruit, line manage and appraise works officers, technicians, craftspersons and apprentices
Provide management cover for the Estates Manager and counterpart Discipline Managers during periods of leave or absenceKey Skills & Experience
Significant experience managing mechanical or electrical estates services within a complex environment (NHS or similar)
Proven ability to manage staff, budgets, contracts and service delivery
Strong understanding of statutory compliance, health & safety and building services legislation
Experience operating as an Authorised Person or working towards AP accreditation
Ability to work effectively with clinicians, operational teams, contractors, suppliers and statutory bodies
Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skillsQualifications & Development

Level 3 qualification in supervisory or management skills (or willingness to achieve)
Level 5 qualification in a trade, engineering or building services discipline (or willingness to achieve)
