Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist – Echocardiography
Hours: 37.5 per week (4 day week: Monday – Friday)
Term: Fixed term for 12 months

Responsibilities
* Perform adult transthoracic echocardiograms, including urgent portable scans, to a high standard in accordance with BSE guidelines and department standards.
* Identify and advise when transthoracic echocardiography is insufficient and proactively suggest alternative or additional investigations.
* Produce accurate and comprehensive reports for each study, maintaining responsibility for own caseload.
* Supervise and audit junior staff workload, ensuring minimum data sets are obtained and standards are audited regularly.
* Provide clinical technical assistance with transoesophageal echocardiography and ensure adherence to cleaning protocols for TOE probes.
* Record and interpret resting adult electrocardiograms; prepare, fit and remove 24‑hour cardiac and blood pressure monitors; issue long‑term monitoring equipment; lead cardiac exercise tests in accordance with British Cardiac Society guidelines.
* Provide support during routine and elective angiography and participate in departmental research, clinical trials or audit.
* Maintain personal competency through CPD activities and managerial responsibilities, and contribute to service development.
* Communicate effectively with medical, nursing staff and patients, assessing physical and mental abilities and using motivational skills to achieve diagnostic accuracy.
* Take responsibility for patient safety during test procedures and manage clinical risk, including Immediate Life Support.
* Manage equipment decontamination, sterilisation and compliance with health and safety standards.
* Participate in flexible shift patterns and on‑call rota as required.
Qualifications and Professional Training
* BSc in Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or equivalent APEL and ONC, plus HNC in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement (MPPM)
* Master level degree or equivalent qualification in Healthcare Science
* Accreditation with BSE or BHRS
* Membership of the Society for Cardiological Science and Technology (MSCST)
* HCPC registered
* Intermediate Life Support
* Mary Seacole NHS Leadership Award or equivalent
* Doctoral degree (DClinSci or PhD) – optional
Experience and Knowledge
* Extensive experience in a formal leadership role within an NHS Hospital Trust.
* Experience as an independent practitioner across routine and specialised investigations and therapeutic interventions, such as 3D Echo, Stress Echo and TOE.
* Evidence of clinical research and audit, with a proven record of developing and implementing training packages.
* Experience working with multidisciplinary teams; governance, QA and/or complaint management.
* Experience in planning and developing specialist services and contributing to local and national policies.
* Experience with the IQIPS accreditation process.
