About Us

Established in 1983, PCM is a third-generation, family-owned engineering business with a deep-rooted passion for precision measurement. We work at the forefront of load cell manufacture, strain gauge installation, and force calibration, combining decades of experience with the latest technologies to deliver solutions that are genuinely best in class on a global scale.

Over more than 40 years, we have continually reinvested in our people, facilities, and capabilities. This sustained commitment has equipped us with the expertise and infrastructure required to solve some of the most complex, unique, and demanding measurement challenges across a wide range of engineering sectors.

Our reputation is built on uncompromising quality, technical rigour, and absolute confidence in traceability. Underpinned by our ISO 9001 and UKAS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditations, our skilled team is trusted by industry leaders worldwide to support their most critical operations, where accuracy and reliability are non-negotiable.

Following a recent rebrand, PCM is now entering an exciting phase of growth. This expansion forms part of our long-term ambition to become the undisputed global leader in load measurement, and we are actively strengthening our technical team to support that journey.

About The Role

As an Instrumentation & Control Engineer within PCM’s highly regarded technical team, you will play a central role in supporting the design, manufacture, and delivery of high-precision load measurement solutions. Working closely with production, calibration, suppliers, and customers, you will contribute across the full project lifecycle - from initial concept and quotation through to manufacture, calibration, and despatch.

This role combines detailed engineering design with hands-on instrumentation expertise. In addition to generating high-quality CAD models, drawings, and technical documentation, you will act as PCM’s internal specialist for instrumentation and control, supporting both day-to-day internal operations and customer applications, alongside cutting-edge research and development. Accuracy, methodical working practices, and a strong systems-level understanding will be essential, as your work directly underpins the performance, reliability, and traceability of our products.

Key Responsibilities

* Prepare, amend, and maintain CAD models and detailed engineering drawings for load cells and strain gauge installations.
* Produce, manage, and control Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifications, and build instructions for production technicians, to ensure consistency and quality.
* Act as PCM’s specialist in Instrumentation & Control, supporting the selection, development, and integration of market-leading instrumentation including displays, data loggers, amplifiers, digitisers, and data loggers.
* Take responsibility for HBM data acquisition systems within our UKAS-accredited calibration laboratory.
* Liaise with customers and suppliers via telephone, email, and face-to-face meetings to provide technical support, recommendations, and fault diagnosis.
* Support customers with test data processing, interpretation, and reporting.
* Contribute to PCB design for standard load cell product ranges to improve manufacturability and scalability.
* Support the introduction and application of safety PLCs for safety-critical lifting and testing projects.
* Design and 3D print production tooling to support efficient and repeatable strain gauge bonding.
* Maintain accurate and comprehensive technical databases and engineering records.
* Contribute to the development of technical whitepapers, application notes, and internal documentation.
* Help maintain and evolve internal software tools and automated processes using MATLAB and VBA.
* Develop new skills within a growing business, with opportunities to progress into a more advanced technical role while working with state-of-the-art equipment.

Key Skills

* A genuine passion for engineering and pride in producing high-quality, accurate work, with a strong focus on precision, consistency, and attention to detail.
* A proactive, can-do attitude with well-developed problem-solving skills, able to approach technical challenges logically and see tasks through to completion.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage politely, professionally, and effectively with colleagues at all levels, including managers, technicians, customers, suppliers, and subcontractors.
* Demonstrates reliability, honesty, and integrity in all aspects of work, alongside a clear willingness to learn, develop new skills, and take on responsibility.
* Able to prioritise workload effectively and remain organised when working under pressure or to tight deadlines, without compromising quality.
* Enjoys working as part of a collaborative team environment and contributes positively to shared objectives and continuous improvement.
* Strong organisational and documentation skills, with an appreciation for traceability, controlled processes, and quality systems such as ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025.
* Comfortable working across multiple projects simultaneously, balancing detailed design work with hands-on technical and customer-facing activities.
* Confident using engineering software tools, with an aptitude for learning new systems, instrumentation platforms, and data analysis tools.

Required Qualifications & Experience

* A degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Instrumentation & Control, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline.
* Practical experience in an engineering environment, ideally involving instrumentation, sensors, measurement systems, or control systems.
* Competence in producing and interpreting CAD models and engineering drawings, with an understanding of design control and revision management.
* A sound understanding of instrumentation and data acquisition systems, including amplifiers, digitisers, and logging equipment.
* Experience working with technical documentation such as specifications, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and work instructions.
* The ability to analyse and interpret test data, with experience using data processing or analysis tools considered advantageous.
* Familiarity with quality systems and controlled processes, or a willingness to work within ISO 9001 and UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 accredited environments.
* A practical, hands-on approach with the ability to engage across design, production, laboratory, and customer-facing activities.
* Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
* Proficiency in standard engineering software tools and Microsoft Office, with an aptitude for learning specialist instrumentation and automation software.
* Good knowledge of English.
* Residence and right to work in the UK.

Desired Qualifications & Experience

* Experience with strain gauges, load cells, force measurement, or calibration activities.
* Exposure to HBM data acquisition systems or similar DAQ platforms.
* Experience with MATLAB, VBA, or other scripting / automation tools.
* PCB design experience and/or exposure to safety PLCs and safety-related control systems.
* An interest in developing technical content such as whitepapers or application notes.

Employee Benefits
