Washington (Tyne and Wear)
Mechanical design engineer
Posted: 21 December
Offer description

About Us: Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) is a Northeast UK based manufacturer of sustainable electric motor and powertrain technologies serving customers worldwide. Our products deliver next generation performance while removing rare earth materials without compromise, and they’ve been recognised for record setting efficiency and power density. As part of our growing engineering team, you’ll contribute to the design and analysis of electric motors, transmissions, and related mechanical systems—working closely with cross functional colleagues to bring robust, high performance solutions to market. This is an on-site role and a great opportunity to join our dynamic and supportive team at our facility in Washington, Tyne and Wear, and to get hands-on experience with our revolutionary motor systems! What you'll do: You will contribute to and collaborate on the mechanical development of AEM products. Participate in mechanical design and optimisation activities to meet and exceed customer requirements—across weight, size, strength, NVH, rotor dynamics, and cost. Use established CAD, CAE, and PLM tools and processes to create designs, run simulations, and manage data; apply hand calculations and engineering judgement where appropriate. Help plan and execute test and validation activities that correlate CAE models with experimental results, supporting reliable design decisions. Specify materials and propose manufacturing methods (e.g., machining, castings) considering performance, supply chain constraints, and cost. Work with supplier s, manufacturers and our internal production engineering team on design for manufacture and the sourcing of prototype parts and components. Collaborate with electromagnetic, thermal, power electronics, and controls engineers on multi physics simulation and integrated product development. Participate in 8D/FRACAS activities to identify root causes and drive corrective actions with the wider team. Contribute to high quality interactions with customers and suppliers as part of project delivery, ensuring requirements and standards are met. Support continuous improvement in design quality and compliance, following established processes and standards. We'd love you to have: MEng (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering—or demonstrable, relevant industrial experience. Professional registration (e.g., CEng with IMechE/IEE) is desirable. Strong experience in mechanical design within a product development environment, including in depth use of 2D/3D CAD and CAE ; experience with rotating electric machines and high volume production is advantageous (automotive experience desirable). Recognised technical capability in mechanical engineering, with broad, multidisciplinary awareness. Proficiency in mechanical and materials analysis/modelling toolsets; ability to choose and apply appropriate methods. Working knowledge of general electrical engineering, electromagnetics, and motor control theory is a plus (not essential). Comfortable working both independently and within larger project teams, contributing to shared objectives and deliverables. In return you’ll get: An opportunity to work for a company producing cutting-edge electric motor and powertrain technologies for customers worldwide. The chance to join a growing business where your achievement will be valued, visible, and recognised. The opportunity to work across the business, using your learned knowledge and skills while exploring and developing on your ideas. Benefits Private healthcare, critical illness, and death-in-service cover (eligibility criteria applies) Competitive salary and pension contributions EV salary sacrifice scheme with FREE onsite charging Enhanced family leave 25 days holiday (rising with service) Paid Volunteering Leave
