AI & Computational Physics Scientist

Net-Zero Geosystems

Who are Net-Zero Geosystems?

Net-Zero Geosystems (NZG) is a science and technology Team focused on the development of geoscientific simulation tools & services for the subsurface. The focus of our work is to provide robust evidence-based solutions to lower the operational risks and optimize the efficiency of subsurface projects. We are driven to deliver industry-leading & high-performance software for our clients. NZG is working on the geosystems of the energy transition (CO
2

storage, geothermal energy, radioactive waste disposal and hydrogen storage) and on traditional geosystems (such as oil & gas). NZG's ambition is to drastically improve the value that simulations tools deliver and to become a major software provider of the subsurface industry. Beyond the success of NZG, we are interested in benefitting society while limiting harm to humans and the environment. We are a small and growing Team, we value in-person interactions, collaboration, accountability, clarity of communications and compassion.

Our technology

Our technology is focussing on enhancing the safety and efficiency of energy geosystems. This includes the sustained long-term containment of greenhouse gases and harmful materials (e.g. CO
2

, high-level radioactive waste), optimizing resource recovery (e.g. geothermal heat extraction), the prolongation of subsurface assets life (e.g. wells) and the prevention of major accidents (fault reactivation and induced seismicity, well blow out). We achieve this through streamlined digital twins for geosystems, which rely on multiphysics simulators, data pipelines, statistical methods and optimization frameworks to deliver benefits to clients.

The role

The AI & Computational Physics Scientist will be driving the delivery of NZG's R&D and applied projects. Applied projects will focus on customizing our existing solutions for our client's operations while R&D projects will be focussed on improving our existing solutions or creating new ones from the ground up. Artificial Intelligence will play a growing role in our solutions, in particular AI will i) enhance early geosystem failure detection (e.g. well leakage, fault reactivation), ii) improve our simulation data pipelines by supporting the extraction and quality control of subsurface data (from geophysical data, heterogenous formats and pdf reports), and iii) create rapid decision support tools. We are interested in contained and focussed applications where AI delivers clear benefits.

Responsibilities

·

Software development:

Build ML models for simulations workflows, improve our simulators and develop new ones, write theory documents, conduct validation and calibration tests, write unit tests, manage the codebase (git/GitHub), conceptualise user interfaces and liaise with subcontractors for their development and deployment on the cloud.

·

Project delivery:

Lead the delivery of work packages and technical objectives for our R&D and applied projects, write deliverable descriptions, monitor progress and ensure deadlines are met, communicate with other team members involved.

·

Product development:

contribute to product direction, understand user and design product specifications to meet them effectively, align business and technical objectives.

·

Building the Team:

help shape our Team culture, participate in hiring and onboarding, establish workflows and communication norms that keeps the Team organised and efficient.

·

Communication and collaboration:

Present research outcomes, project milestones, and development progress to the Team, external stakeholders, and to the industrial and scientific community.

About you

What we are looking for in our ideal candidate:

· Self-reflection and emotional intelligence

· Scientific rigour and attention to detail.

· Awareness beyond technical considerations such as business and client priorities.

· A track record of delivering and meeting deadlines.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· A track record of applying ML toolkits to engineering problems and integrating them in with simulation workflows.

· Experience in deriving partial differential equations and in developing numerical methods (FEM, FDM, FVM, …).

· Proficiency in programming languages.

· Experience applying simulations to engineering problems.

· Experience with version control and unit testing.

· A background in geoscience or other engineering background.

The list above is an ideal, we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't cover every item – you can learn with us. We value curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in the role.

What does Net-Zero Geosystems offer?

· Flexible working hours & hybrid working (at present, 3 days in the office and 2 days remote)

· days holiday (excluding bank holidays)

Our office is in London and as a result, the role
is only suitable for
UK-based individuals living within
a commutable distance from London (<1h) and to those willing to relocate.
