As part of the wider team in general practice, General Practice Assistants (GPA) provide support by carrying out administrative tasks.
GPAs are trained to undertake routine administration and basic clinical duties. They help to free up GPs' time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, thereby improving patients' experience in the surgery.
The General Practice Assistant supports the smooth operation of clinics by performing routine administrative and basic clinical tasks on behalf of the GP. They must work within their scope of practice and escalate concerns to the GP as necessary.
Main duties of the job
* Assist Clinical Pharmacists in identifying high-risk patients for drug monitoring and medication reviews.
* Contact patients to arrange onward care and/or provide clinical feedback under instruction from hospitals or GPs.
* Extract information from clinical letters, code it, and add to patient notes when required.
* Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up appointments.
* Complete basic forms and core elements of forms for GP approval.
* Assist the GP in liaising with outside agencies, such as contacting on-call doctors for advice or arranging admissions, allowing the GP to continue consultations.

Qualifications
* Completed or working towards the GP Assistant framework.
* Demonstrate Maths and English at GCSE level.
Knowledge
* Knowledge of IT systems such as SystmOne and Microsoft Office.
* Understanding of confidentiality and medical terminology.
* Understanding of the referral process.
Experience
* Experience working in a health environment.
* Experience working in a team.
* Experience using clinical IT systems and clinical coding.
