H&S advisor- Southampton & Surrounding areas Role purpose: The Health & Safety Advisor role is responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring and review of policies and procedures relating to any aspect of Health, Safety & Environment and 'safe working practices' on site. On a day-to-day basis this role reports to the Construction Director however there is a dotted line towards the Contract Managers' as you will be expected to work effectively alongside them and will take direction and instruction from them in regards the priorities of their sites. Similarly, you may work alongside the HR Manager on training initiatives and or investigations etc. You will have ultimate accountability to the Managing Director and in their absence the Operations Director. You will have regular contact with individuals of varying positions internally, and externally (i.e. clients, other sub-contractors on site, relevant authorities etc), so the ability to communicate effectively at all levels is required. You will be required to build relationships. This will include engaging operatives and positively promoting our safety values at all times. Typical activities expected of this role include but are not limited to: Supporting managers and employees to implement the health and safety systems, including delivery of objectives and plans Regular site visits and completion of site audits Ensuring knowledge of all relevant legislation is up to date and current Undertaking incident/accident investigation and report writing Outlining safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards Undertaking risk assessments and site inspections to consider how risks can be reduced Working with the Contract Managers to create risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and ensuring compliance with the agreed methods on site Completing traffic management plans Keeping records of inspection findings and producing reports that highlight any trends and form this suggest preventative action and improvements Delivering site safety inductions to new site operatives Ensuring that equipment is installed correctly/safely Writing internal health and safety policies/strategies Compiling statistics to review in monthly management meetings Assisting with completion of tender documents for anything HSE related Making presentations/training workshops to groups of employees/managers/clients Instigating health and safety meetings and training courses for managers and employees which will include chairing quarterly health & safety meetings Completing Toolbox talks regularly Updating the company training matrix Following up on the findings provided in our independent external audit reports Liaising with relevant authorities, i.e., Health and Safety Executive Ensuring compliance with environmental statutory obligations Managing and organising the safe disposal of hazardous substances, e.g., asbestos Advising on a range of specialist areas, e.g., fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases Responsibility for ensuring internal quality standards are maintained with regards to quality on site and ensuring operatives are adhering to client standards and requirements. Qualifications & Experience : As a minimum we expect the successful applicant to possess the NEBOSH General certificate and ideally have or be working towards additional certificates such as NEBOSH construction and or NEBOSH Environmental. A construction background is essential and ideally you will have experience working in a 'Groundworks' environment. You must possess a valid in-date CSCS card to enable you to access site. Person specification Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written to enable you to engage with all levels of people in an effective and meaningful way Strong organisational skills - whilst an element of your workload will be driven by the needs of our Contract Managers and Clients, there is level of autonomy to this role, and we will expect this person to be able to manage their time effectively and organise your week to ensure maximum output. Prioritisation skills - like organisational skills, we expect you to be able to prioritise your workload accordingly and display good judgment as to what you feel the priorities are. This includes the ability to react quickly to changes in priorities to meet the needs of the business. Excellent IT skills - This role requires an ability to present information internally and externally in a clear, succinct, and visual manner to relay key information, data points or engage relevant individuals in a way that is meaningful to them. Resilience - This can be a highly pressurised role at times so the ability to work well under pressure whilst dealing with setbacks is vital to this role.
