An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lung Cancer Clinical Specialist Nurse/practitioner to join the innovative and caring lung cancer team to be a part of the development of the service to support people with lung cancer. The post will be based at the Cancer Centre at Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.


The Lung cancer service within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is looking for an experienced, dynamic and highly motivated Band 7 nurse with a good knowledge of Lung Cancer and Oncology.

This role will involve supporting patients with highly complex care needs that require specialist assessment, treatment and care planning. You will need to be an energetic, motivated specialist nurse who possesses excellent communication skills, allowing you to support patients and families through their cancer pathway. A key aspect of the role involves working with the team to deliver the optimal lung cancer pathway. In addition to direct patient care the role will involve supporting junior staff & delivering education through teaching.

Main duties of the job

To work as an autonomous Clinical Nurse Specialist/ Clinical Cancer Specialist.

To have a designated case load and coordinate and plan the care as keyworker for cancer patients.

To provide expert advice related to specific conditions or treatment pathways.

Focus on improving patient care and service development

To assess patients holistically, plan, implement and evaluate evidence based care.

To provide specialist advice to patient families and carers and the wider multidisciplinary team.

To carry out specialist nursing procedures in relation to cancer patients.

To contribute to the development of the workforce through delivering education and training.

To lead service development within the team.

To participate in research activity and clinical audits in own specialist area;

To work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the cohesive management of patients.

To act as a key worker for designated patients as appropriate across the patient’s pathway.

Supervises delivering a range of clinical and core nursing skills and interventions to meet physiological and psychosocial needs.

The lung cancer team are proud to deliver an excellent service to all our patients. We are a dynamic team of specialist nurses and practitioners and we are expanding the team currently and recruiting to additional posts of patient navigator and a cancer support worker to work within our team
We are well supported by our consultant colleagues to ensure high quality care for our lung patients.

The Lancashire Teaching Hospital Trust Lung service is currently undertaking a full review of their current cancer pathway using the Flow Coach ‘Big Room’ methodology; bringing together multidisciplinary staff along the care pathway, enabling them to focus on the patient experience and assess, diagnose and iteratively test changes to improve patient flow.
We are keen to ensure we constantly improve our service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assess patients holistically, plan implement and evaluate evidence based care. Provide specialist advice to patients families and carers and the wider multidisciplinary team. Responsible for ensuring the provision of Excellent Care with Compassion across a number of areas and or services including a caseload.

Develop and run nurse led telephone follow up clinics

Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and patients and their carers in a manner that is consistent with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.

Assess patients information needs and provide relevant information to meet those needs at defined points in the patient pathway

Attend and actively participate in multi-professional meetings, acting as the patients advocate and representing their views and needs.

Participate in innovation and change concerned with improving the standards of care for patients.

As you may know the Government passed legislation requiring vaccination as a condition of deployment which was due to come in from 1 April 2022. However on the 31 Jan 2022 the Secretary of State has announced that this is being reconsidered. Whilst we wait for further guidance, as a Trust we have made the decision to continue to gather vaccine status during our pre-employment stages should you be made an offer, no offer would be conditional upon you having a vaccine but we need to make you aware that if the decision is taken by the government to implement mandated Covid vaccines in the future then your employment may be at risk if you do not have these.

Vaccination against C continues to be the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and, of course, your patients from the virus. NHS England and NHS Improvement have always been clear that staff have a professional duty to be vaccinated.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

1. •Appropriate NMC Registration
2. •Mentorship qualification
3. •Post Registration Qualifications relevant to the role
4. •Degree level qualification
5. •Advanced communication skills
6. •Cancer nursing experience

Desirable criteria

7. Leadership qualification
8. MSc
9. NMP

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

10. •Able to perform clinical duties commensurate to that of the role
11. •Ability to Implement changes within nursing practice
12. •Knowledge og lung cancer and pathways
13. •Knowledge of Clinical Governance and Safeguarding and the relevance of these to practice
14. •Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
15. •Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
16. Knowledge of local/national Health and Social Care policy
17. •Knowledge and experience of research

Desirable criteria

18. •Experience of managing within a clinical area
19. •Knowledge of the PDPR Process
20. •Evidence of working at a senior nursing level
21. •Experience of budgetary management
22. •Experience in nurse-led clinics
23. •Experience in developing guidelines or protocols
