The Role:
If you are practically minded, able to work as part of a team, enjoy a mixture of outside and office-based work, are good at dealing with people and would like to help maintain the 8,000+km of highways in the beautiful County of Hampshire, then this diverse role is definitely for you.
You'll provide technical assistance in the delivery of the network management/highway maintenance service, including highways inspections and the design of simple highways maintenance/minor improvement schemes. Additionally, you will assist in delivery of our duties regarding regulation of activities on the highway and our response to highway and weather emergencies both in and (sometimes) out of normal hours.
And if that's not enough, you don't even need to have any previous highways experience. We will provide you with excellent training and development to help you succeed and develop your career within this fantastic organisation.
Through maintaining roads and footways, the work that we do directly impacts the whole community. By joining us, you could be helping to make a positive difference for everybody that lives in, works in, or visits Hampshire.
What you’ll do:
As an Advanced Technician, you'll assist engineers in delivering a wide variety of highway repairs throughout Hampshire. You'll also handle highway emergencies, respond to adverse weather, and enforce highway regulations to ensure the efficient use of Hampshire’s highway network. By maintaining roads and footways, your work will directly impact the entire community. Join us and help make a positive difference for everyone living in, working in, or visiting Hampshire.
What we’re looking for:
We’re looking for someone with GCSE-level education (or equivalent) in English and Maths, or relevant experience that demonstrates the ability to perform effectively across a broad range of responsibilities. You should have a genuine interest in highway engineering and the maintenance of a large road network, along with strong IT skills and the ability to record information accurately.
Clear communication, both written and verbal, is essential, as is the ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues, contractors, members of the public and local councillors. You’ll need to be flexible and willing to work outside normal hours when required, particularly during weather-related or emergency situations, and capable of managing your own workload to meet deadlines.
It would be an advantage if you hold a BTEC in Civil Engineering or have equivalent experience, and if you can provide occasional cover for more senior colleagues. Experience supporting or mentoring new starters, a broader knowledge of the service area, the ability to innovate and share new ideas, and the capacity to take on additional responsibilities associated with the next level of the role would also be beneficial.
