Offer description

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and confident individual to join our Cyber Team as a Digital Media Investigator.

Location: Bristol, Kenneth Steele House- BS2 0TQ

Policing is already challenging and rewarding. This role is for people who want to take that a step further by applying digital skills to real investigations that make a difference to victims and communities. Digital Media Investigators support serious and complex enquiries by identifying, securing and explaining digital evidence. You will work where technology, investigation and victim care meet, helping officers understand what digital opportunities exist and how they can be used properly and proportionately. If you are curious rather than overwhelmed by concepts like metadata, digital artefacts or online attribution, and you enjoy problem-solving, this could be the right next step for you.

The Role

DMIs provide specialist digital support across the force. You will work closely with CID, Cyber, safeguarding teams and Senior Investigating Officers on investigations involving serious violence, sexual offences, cybercrime and child protection. You will be involved early, advising on digital strategy and helping ensure opportunities are identified and preserved from the outset. You will not be working alone. This role sits within an experienced, supportive team where knowledge is shared and learning is ongoing. No two investigations are the same, and your input will often be critical in turning digital information into usable evidence. Your work will include:

* Supporting cyber‑dependent and cyber‑enabled crime investigations
* Analysing complex digital material and identifying evidential value
* Providing advice, reassurance and signposting to victims of cybercrime
* Improving digital confidence across the force through guidance and training

Key responsibilities

As a Digital Media Investigator, you will:

* Provide early tactical digital advice to Senior Investigating Officers and ongoing support to Officers in Charge
* Identify, capture and assess digital evidence, including online and network‑based material.
* Conduct open‑source research and intelligence development.
* Attend crime scenes, arrests and interviews where required.
* Deliver briefings, inputs and training to officers and staff.
* Support proactive and, where appropriate, covert activity.
* Manage your own investigative workload.
* Offer clear, professional and empathetic guidance to victims of cybercrime

Skills, experience and knowledge

Essential:

* Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain digital concepts clearly
* Experience of investigations, intelligence development or open‑source research
* Confidence working with serious and sensitive criminal investigations, including offences involving children and vulnerable victims
* Sound decision‑making skills and the ability to manage competing demands
* A working understanding of networks and digital evidence
* A full UK driving licence, as travel across the force area is required

Desirable:

* Knowledge of cybercrime and prevention approaches
* PIP Level 1, or willingness to obtain it (training will be provided)
* Experience working with digital devices, data or technical investigative processes

What we can offer you:

A package of financial, lifestyle and health benefits to support whatever stage of life you're in, including:

* Flexible working
* Structured training and ongoing professional development
* Continuous professional development
* Local Government Pension Scheme
* Employee Assistance scheme offering help through counselling services, legal advice, fitness advice, personal coaching and health assessment
* Staff discount scheme for savings on shopping, days out, sporting events, holidays

Additional Information

If you are successful in the recruitment process you will start on pay scale 6. Upon completing additional specialist training there is the opportunity to progress to SO1 and SO2.

Work on a bank or public holiday as part of the normal working week will be compensated in line with conditions of service.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.
