We’re recruiting a Financial Controller for a well-established and growing construction business based near Portsmouth. Following the retirement of a long-serving team member, this is an opportunity to take full ownership of the finance function, build on solid foundations and help shape the future of the department.
The role is hands-on but far from transactional - you’ll be producing management accounts, driving process improvements and acting as a key partner to the directors in supporting commercial and operational decisions. It’s ideal for someone who enjoys variety, autonomy and being part of a close-knit, down-to-earth team.
Reporting to the Director, you will be responsible for:
* Managing the day-to-day finance function, ensuring robust controls and accurate reporting
* Preparing management accounts, P&L, balance sheets and cash flow
* Overseeing VAT, CIS returns and bank reconciliations
* Reviewing ledgers and supporting purchase ledger management
* Partnering with directors, project managers and QS teams on financial performance
* Supporting payroll (outsourced) and statutory reporting with external accountants
* Leading process improvements and system enhancements to increase efficiency
* Being a point of contact for finance queries from the team
What you will need:
* Previous experience in a similar role, such as Financial Controller / Finance Director / Finance Manager / Head of Finance / Accountant / Senior Management Accountant
* Hands-on finance experience within an SME, ideally in project-based environments
* Strong management accounting and reporting skills
* A proactive and practical approach – comfortable balancing detail and big-picture thinking
* Intermediate Excel skills – data manipulation and reporting
