Paediatric Staff Nurse - Emergency Services
Band 5, Permanent contract, 37.5 hours per week (full or part time). Job Ref 372-MED2642-A.
Job Overview
We are seeking a Registered Children's Nurse to join our Paediatric Emergency Department at Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
Main Duties
* Providing high quality nursing care and supporting team members to maintain best practice.
* Ensuring the safety of self, colleagues, patients and visitors in the Emergency Department.
* Implementing evidence‑based assessment and care to children and families.
* Developing and maintaining advanced emergency nursing skills, including IV administration, cannulation, venepuncture, care of central lines and other clinical roles linked to the department.
* Working within the NMC code of practice and departmental policies.
* Ensuring high standards of nursing care; acting when standards are not maintained.
* Recognising changes in a patient's condition and referring appropriately.
* Advocating for patient and family interests, rights, equality, inclusion and privacy.
* Acting as a Link Nurse within a defined speciality/interest area.
* Participating in Trust initiatives to improve patient safety and care.
Qualifications & Training
* NMC Registered Nurse or within six months of completing a validated BSc or MSc resulting in registration.
* Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor qualification or willingness to complete.
* Additional post‑registration qualification relevant to field of practice.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Role Specific Training relevant to specialty of the post.
* Teaching qualification.
* Leadership qualification.
Knowledge, Experience & Expertise
* Plan, deliver and evaluate high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing care to a group of patients.
* Experience working with patients from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
* Experience working as part of a team and prioritising workload.
* Knowledge of infection prevention and control principles and procedures.
* Knowledge of safeguarding principles and procedures.
* IT literacy and ability to use NHS systems.
* Competence in specialty‑specific extended skills or willingness to undertake necessary training.
* Clinical experience in the specialty of the post.
* Skills in research and audit methodology and application of findings to practice.
* Evidence of introducing change and innovation into nursing practice.
Communication and Relationships (Including Management Responsibilities)
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to work under pressure.
* Flexibility to meet the needs of the service.
* Human factors awareness.
