The Highways & Waste team are responsible for ensuring that Gateshead is a safe and attractive place in which people can live, work and spend free time. From waste strategy, including collection and recycling to the maintenance of our highways and street lighting. You ve probably also noticed significant investment in the restoration of the Tyne Bridge, and our Highways team continue to play a pivotal role in that restoration project of a local landmark. About the role: You will assist the Network Team in its various highways tasks as well as working closely with the general public, Utility providers and local Councillors to provide solutions to everyday highway issues and Network planning issues. Knowledge of civic engineering procedures and good numeracy, literacy and IT skills are essential requirements for the post. A qualification at BTEC National Diploma or higher in Civil Engineering or Transport Planning together with experience with Autocad and highways general transport planning would be an advantage. What you'll get to do: Investigating traffic issues in a designated area of Gateshead forwarded from the public and councillors. Assisting the team in ensuring the council s duties in Network Management are fulfilled. Creating and issuing Traffic Regulation Orders. Assisting the team in ensuring events on the highway are controlled and meet legal requirements. Supporting SAG (Safety Advisory Group) in assessing events which impact the highway network. Keeping abreast of appropriate current technical, legislative and administrative matters to provide advice, guidance and direction as required. Assisting in the development and maintenance of a customeroriented, highquality approach to service delivery to ensure the service remains relevant and appropriate. Contributing to and assisting in the promotion of good practice and best value to help establish a beacon authority. Carrying out any other responsibilities allocated which are appropriate to the grade of the post. What you'll bring: Organisational experience in a traffic or transport environment. Experience managing smallscale traffic schemes. Experience drafting Traffic Regulation Orders. Experience working with stakeholders, suppliers, and external partners. Understanding of Highway Law and Road Traffic Regulation Orders. Knowledge of traffic engineering practices. Understanding of traffic management regulations and the setup of traffic management measures on the highway. Knowledge of highway policies and practices. 5 GCSE passes at Grade C or above (or equivalent). OR: ONC (or equivalent). OR: Relevant qualification in civil engineering, transport planning, or a related discipline. Full UK driving licence.
