HSL was formed to provide pathology services to the NHS Trusts and has expanded further to provide services to other NHS Trusts. Over 3,500 staff work at Sonic Healthcare UK, primarily under the TDL or HSL banner.
Our purpose is to deliver medically-led diagnostics, innovation, value and long-term investment to healthcare. With our core laboratory based at The Halo Building in London WC1H 9AX, we also have an expanding site in Manchester as well as smaller hospital-based laboratories across the country. We maintain rigorously high standards of quality, whilst also delivering efficiencies to healthcare through careful workforce planning, pioneering technology and significant investment in infrastructure and IT.

The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratory is state of the art, superbly equipped and handles the workload of University College London Hospitals (UCLH). Working as part of a team, this is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and experience in a highly automated and complex clinical Haematology and Blood Transfusion department. The laboratory is responsible for servicing the Haematology pathology needs of UCLH which is the largest Cancer referral centre in Western Europe. It is also a National referral centre for Thrombotic Thrombocytopaenic Purpura (TTP). There is a large cohort of Haematology Oncology Referral work and also a large Haemoglobinopathy support requirement and as such the Blood Film Morphology seen is extremely varied and second to none. Novel therapies such as CAR-T therapy make for some morphological anomalies rarely seen elsewhere.
The Blood Transfusion department is a Blood Establishment, where blood compatibility testing and blood provision is provided to various patient cohorts such as Sickle Cell patients who are on regular exchange programs, patients requiring top up transfusions from Cancer Centre daycare consisting mainly of Haematology, oncology and Thalassaemia Major. Complex cases are seen at foetal medicine unit (FMU), where patients at high risk are referred from other areas of the country. Blood provision is also provided for pre-op patients at National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) and Westmoreland Hospital. The BT service also supports the TTP Plasma exchange service.
