In this volunteer role, you will support our NHS Lothian Aftercare Co-ordinator, who receives referrals from an NHS alcohol step-down unit in the South-West of Edinburgh. The unit supports men and women affected by ARBD, who stay there for several months to recover after detoxing in hospital. ARBD (Alcohol Related Brain Damage) is the term that is used to describe a range of symptoms such as: difficulty remembering, difficulty concentrating, feeling confused, irritated, or having difficulty making choices and decisions.
As a Volunteer Befriender, you’ll be matched with an individual and provide one-to-one companionship — first through visits at the unit and then continuing once they’re discharged and living back in the community.
Experience required
No special qualifications are needed — just good spoken English, empathy, and the ability to listen without judgement.
Over the years, our service users have told us that what they value most is simply having someone to talk to: someone to listen, laugh with, share interests — and not try to “fix” them.
If that sounds like you, please get in touch!
Restrictions
Minimum age: 18
Ability to travel to and from Edinburgh whilst the individual is in the step down unit and then to travel within West Lothian.
