The Medical Examiner Officer is an exciting role that supports the Medical Examiner service. You will need a sound knowledge of processes following a patient’s death, along with excellent customer service, communication, and organisational skills. The work involves liaising with doctors and dealing with people at a difficult time, requiring a caring and compassionate approach.
The Medical Examiner system, introduced across England and Wales, provides greater scrutiny of deaths. Medical Examiners are senior medical doctors contracted to undertake these duties outside their usual clinical roles, trained in legal and clinical aspects of death certification.
The purpose of the Medical Examiner process is to:
* Agree the proposed cause of death with doctors and improve the accuracy of death certification
* Discuss the cause of death with next of kin and address any concerns regarding care
* Act as a medical advice resource for the coroner
* Inform case selection for further review under local mortality arrangements and contribute to clinical governance
This is a challenging but rewarding role within a supportive team, focused on improving the experience for bereaved families. The role involves supporting medical examiners in scrutinising causes of death, acting as a point of contact and advice source for relatives, healthcare professionals, the coroner, and registration services.
