Back End Developer
What we do: build the most AI‑driven, innovative, forward‑thinking platform for energy management. From optimising resources to delivering cost‑effective, exceptional customer experiences through advanced Customer Information Systems (CIS), billing, meter data management, CRM, and AI‑driven communications, Kraken is powering the next wave of innovation in the energy industry.
Why we do it: Future energy will not look like energy as we know it today. We need to not just think about our future, but build for it. Now.
We’ve had great success in using AI to bring better service to customers, and we are bringing that success to the whole business. You’ll be part of a small expert team working on the most pressing problems for the business – for example, automating processes to cut months off migration times for new clients. You’ll work across the whole product lifecycle: identifying uses of new technologies via exploration, working closely with teams around the business to validate that your ideas will bring value, and rapidly prototyping. The work you do will define the pattern for AI success at the company.
What you’ll do
* Solve difficult design challenges in the UK utilities market – complex, outdated and process‑heavy. Strong attention to detail is essential.
* Handle challenging technical problems such as processing tens of millions of meter readings a day, building the right technology to handle this smoothly and feeding data into a machine‑learning pipeline that models and predicts consumption. Consider how to adapt Kraken to improve other utilities like water and broadband.
* Execute opportunities for disruption in the UK energy market, where the big suppliers still dominate but are not exactly popular. The energy landscape is changing as we move to more dis‑aggregated forms of generation, with less predictability, more dynamism and smarter technology.
What you’ll need
* General interest in technology and problem‑solving; diligent and thoughtful. Experience/expertise in the following (in rough priority order) is helpful:
* Python
* Django (or equivalent web framework)
* Domain modelling
* HTTP and REST APIs
* Writing robust and fault‑tolerant software
* Celery and async processing
* Postgres
Plus experience in the following would be a bonus:
* AWS
* Terraform, Packer, Consul
Why else you’ll love it here
* Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us. We cover it on a call with one of our recruiters because we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. We don’t advertise it to keep flexibility and prevent salary from being a barrier to application.
* Kraken has an unique culture. An organisation where people learn, decide, and build quicker. People work with autonomy, alongside a wide range of amazing co‑owners, on projects that break new ground. We reward hard work with perks you actually care about.
