Job overview
The Senior Dental Nurse will work within a team of Senior Dental Nurses and the Service Coordinator responsible for the day to day running of dental services across the Trust. Each Senior Dental Nurse is responsible for the line management of nurses and decontamination technicians, and receptionists and administration staff at their bases, including management of absence, appraisals, and rostering.
Responsibilities of the Senior Dental Nurses include ensuring adequate support to Dental Clinical Supervisors and Dental Students and maintaining professional standards. It also includes responsibility to patients.
Main duties of the job
* The Senior Dental Nurse will be responsible for the recruitment, training and development of Dental Nurses. This will include ongoing in-service training and developments for existing staff, assisting with the appointment of new staff, induction and training programmes for students attached to each department.
* The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance of Dental Nurse rotas. This will include recording leave, time owing, sickness of Dental Nurses/reception staff/dental therapist and Dental Officers.
* Ensure a good rapport is established between Dental Nurses and patients both in the clinic and whilst doing reception duties such as telephone manner and queries.
* The post holder will be responsible for ensuring at operational level the smooth running of clinic sessions held within Dental Clinics and other appropriate locations throughout the area.
* The post holder will be the main point of contact for general queries, regarding services provided by the department, including requests for special services, domiciliary visits etc. and will undertake the necessary arrangements with the Dental Officers for the provision of these services.
* The post holder will undertake appraisal of support staff including KSF framework and assist staff on the preparation of portfolios demonstrating personal competencies.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
* General education to minimum of level NVQ 3 and National Certificate in Dental Nursing
* Current registration with the GDC
* 3 Post Registration Qualifications from the following five: Radiography, Sedation, Special Care, Paediatrics, Oral Health
* Evidence of continuous personal and professional development
Desirable criteria
* Leadership training qualification or equivalent experience
Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
* Policies relating to vulnerable groups such as Safeguarding, Mental Capacity
* Appropriate Information Governance issues
* Relevant Health and Safety Policies
* Appropriate Risk Assessment requirements
* The need to monitor all aspects of Clinical Governance and Infection Control in a learning environment
* 3 experience years of dental nursing
* Experience of working with IT dental software packages

* Ability to make decisions individually or collectively within the DEC structure and within Community Dental (eg. Senior Nurse meetings)
* Proven time management to ensure DEC works effectively and also within Community Dental setting (eg Senior Nurse duties)
