Our client, who resides in the county of Northamptonshire, is seeking a Houseman/Footman who is able to support the smooth running of a private household by performing a variety of domestic, maintenance, and service duties. This dual-role position combines elements of traditional porter, and household assistant work, requiring discretion, professionalism, and attention to detail. The ideal candidate is adaptable, service-oriented, and experienced in formal household protocol.
Key Responsibilities:
Houseman Duties:
1. Assist with general cleaning and maintenance of indoor and outdoor areas
2. Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks (light plumbing, bulb changes, furniture moving)
3. Support housekeeping staff with heavy lifting and deep cleaning
4. Run errands (dry cleaning, groceries, deliveries)
5. Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and household products
6. Oversee proper functioning of appliances and systems, report or coordinate repairs
7. Opening the house for Principals and colleagues
8. Assist with house projects by moving historic furniture for the curatorial team
9. Valet cars for the principals and refuelling
10. Care of family pets, including overnight stays
11. General handyman duties such as painting, some minor carpentry, plumbing and basic repairs
12. Assisting with weekly alarm testing
13. Chaperoning contractors
14. Out of hours alarm response
Footman Duties:
15. Greet guests and provide butler-style service as needed
16. Set up and serve formal meals and refreshments, following etiquette
17. Assist with table setting, polishing silverware, and preparing dining areas
18. Escort guests, manage coats and luggage, and assist during events
19. Assist chauffeur if requested
Requirements:
20. Proven experience in property or estate maintenance management, with a strong understanding of historic house upkeep
21. Knowledge of formal service, etiquette, and household protocols
22. Discretion, trustworthiness, and respect for privacy
23. Good physical condition and ability to lift/move furniture or heavy items
24. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed
25. Valid driver’s licence
26. Right to work in the country of employment

Working days: Usually work Monday – Friday but if there are events the candidate will be required to work weekends/evenings, it all depends on bookings

Salary: £30,000-£35,000
