Job Introduction

We are currently recruiting for an experienced leader to join our Team at Tarmac’s Cement Plant in Dunbar, Scotland. The Shift Manager plays a critical role in managing the process plant and people from the raw material stores through to despatch, ensuring work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner and that the plant is operated in compliance with safety, environmental, planning and company guidelines.

The role is primarily a day shift, but due to the 24‑hour operation it may require occasional night working, weekends and bank holidays, and on‑call duties when required. It is key to maintaining a consistent high level of safety and efficiency while meeting all regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities include building strong relationships with stakeholders across the site and wider company, reporting to the Production Manager, and line managing shift supervisors on site.

* Apply the highest standards in accordance with CRH 16 Rules and legal requirements.
* Organise regular toolbox talks and review isolation procedures routinely.
* Ensure risk assessments and method statements are completed.
* Perform regular Safety Leadership Interactions (SLIs).

Management, Leadership & Communication

* Manage 24/7 operations of the teams, ensuring work meets required standards and productivity while using safe practices.
* Foster a culture of teamwork and handle employee relations in line with company policies.
* Drive the annual performance cycle and hold regular 1‑1s with direct reports.
* Ensure shift teams are covered during absences.
* Manage production department contractors.
* Develop the team and drive improved job performance and satisfaction to meet department objectives.
* Propose suitable training programmes and ensure they are carried out.

Operational Excellence

Decreasing Costs

* Maintain awareness of plant operating costs and consider them in decision‑making and industrial impact, including KPIs.
* Reduce variable costs by minimising disruption costs, power consumption and improving fuel economy.
* Consistently promote a continuous improvement culture.
* Maintain awareness of the automation system control strategy and recommend continuous improvements.
* Challenge shift managers on production cost control.
* Manage purchase requisitions and purchase orders through SAP.

Increasing Productivity & Reliability

* Coordinate all interventions in event of breakdowns.
* Co‑ordinate plant resources to troubleshoot, inspect and maintain equipment to meet production demands and prevent failures.
* Participate in RCAs by collecting and preparing data and information for discussion.
* Liaise with engineering, process and other technical functions to increase reliability and performance of major production assets.
* Ensure production inspector and shift teams conduct first‑level inspections, record findings in SAP PM and take corrective actions.
* Ensure critical sensor issues are logged and communicated.
* Prioritise recurring faults in cross‑functional meetings.
* Manage stocks of critical raw materials as delegated, including clinker, limestone, gypsum, tyres, PSP, SRF and ammonia.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have demonstrable operational and leadership experience in a comparable role, potentially with an engineering background, and will be able to demonstrate team development. They are flexible, self‑motivated, and possess a positive attitude and a commitment to maintaining and improving health, safety and environmental standards across the department and site.
