Job Overview
Suitable for a fully qualified Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) registered with the Foundation Certificate in Critical Care (FICM) or a soon‑to‑be qualified ACCP who has trained in a programme that adheres to the FICM curriculum. A non‑medical prescribing qualification is required. This role offers an opportunity for an ACCP to develop in a substantive position within a tertiary ICU setting, gaining experience across major trauma, vascular, neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology patient care. The ICU at North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) has 46 beds with a mix of level 2/3 patients. Main Responsibilities
* Provide expert clinical care to all unit patients under the local or distant supervision of ICU consultants, working on the medical rota in a role traditionally performed by resident medical staff.
* Work flexibly in conjunction with ICU consultants and other medical staff to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred care to critically ill patients.
* Obtain, evaluate and synthesise information from physiological assessment, patient history and diagnostic tests, identifying and prioritising relevant problems.
* Use clinical decision making to initiate appropriate management plans and treatments.
* Undertake initial assessment, stabilisation and transfer of critically ill patients wherever they may be in the hospital.
* Be cognisant of the boundaries and limitations of the ACCP role, referring patients appropriately to other healthcare professionals when necessary.
* Undertake admission and discharge processes from ICU following consultation with the consultant or other ICU medical staff.
* Perform practical procedures common to critical care, including peripheral and central venous access, arterial puncture and cannulation, chest drainage, tracheostomy insertion, lumbar puncture, ascitic drainage and sampling from abdominal or pleural cavities.
* Order laboratory and radiological tests, and blood products for transfusion.
* Work in accordance with all relevant infection control practices and policies.
* Ensure record keeping is timely, accurate and confidential.
Person Specification
Education / Training / Qualifications – Essential Criteria
* Qualified ACCP with MSc.
* Trainee ACCPs with PGDip (and working to complete MSc) and expected to complete training within the next 4 months.
* Clinical portfolio demonstrating completion of FICM competencies for ACCP posts.
* Registered with FICM.
* Professional qualification (nursing, physiotherapy, paramedic or pharmacist) and registration with the relevant professional governing body (NMC, HPC, GPhC, etc).
* Non‑medical prescribing qualification.
* Bachelor’s degree (minimum 2:2 classification).
* Advanced Life Support Provider Certificate.
Education / Training / Qualifications – Desirable Criteria
* Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or European Trauma Course (ETC) certificate.
* Recognised post‑registration qualifications in critical care.
* Possession of a recognised teaching and/or leadership qualification.
Knowledge and Experience – Essential Criteria
* Evidence of enhanced critical care knowledge and relevant clinical skills.
* Demonstrates sound clinical reasoning for a range of acute and critical care conditions.
* Evidence of continued professional development in critical care.
Knowledge and Experience – Desirable Criteria
* Evidence of multi‑professional teaching experience.
* Evidence of involvement with audit and clinical governance.
* Evidence of significant contribution to a healthcare quality improvement project.
* Experience in neurosciences and trauma critical care, including care of post‑operative neurosurgical patients and critically‑injured major trauma patients.
