Main duties of the job
17 enthusiastic consultants provide shop-floor teaching and long-term educational supervision. Our team includes an F2, GPVTS, ACCS CT1s, EM HSTs, CESR doctors, ENPs, and ACPs. A dedicated consultant for medical education provides bookable supervisory time.
Job responsibilities
The Urgent and Emergency Care Centre delivers a 24-hour emergency service to a population of over 255,000. The centre co-locates primary care and the emergency department, with a daily attendance of ~127,000.
Clinical Duties
Responsibilities:
- Serve on the resident doctor rota with 60-80% of time spent on clinical duties.
- Assess and manage all categories of patients presenting to the emergency department, under consultant supervision.
- Maintain highest clinical standards in patient management.
- Assist with teaching, training, and assessment of junior staff, medical students, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary team members.
- Facilitate patient assessment, treatment and admission within the emergency department.
- Liaise with other specialties and agencies, including primary care.
- Request diagnostic tests and collect biological samples using trust systems.
- Document all patient records accurately in line with trust protocols, including coding.
- Consult with relatives regarding patient care, maintaining confidentiality.
- Accompany patients to other areas such as radiology or intensive care when required.
- Communicate effectively with other health professionals within and outside the trust.
Hours of Work
Full shift pattern of 40 hours per week, with dedicated time for the clinical fellow specialism. The Tier 4 rota will be annualised and self-rostered from September 2025 under the supervision of the rota lead.
Break Entitlement
The rota operates as a full shift rota; specialty trainees can expect to work for the whole duty period, except for natural breaks. A natural break is a continuous 30-minute break after approximately four hours of duty. If a break cannot be taken, an exception report must be completed.
Study and Training
Each doctor has a nominated consultant as a clinical supervisor who meets regularly.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Full registration and Licence to practice with the GMC
- MBBS Medical Degree
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- ALS Provider; Instructor candidate status for ALS
- MRCEM or equivalent
- APLS/EPALS
- ATLS or other relevant courses
Experience
- Previous NHS experience at Senior Clinical Fellow level
- At least 5 years post-graduate NHS clinical experience
- Working at ST4 level or equivalent, with at least 6 months experience in both anaesthetics and intensive care medicine
