Job overview

An exciting and rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced spinal cord injury nurse to join our well established Major Trauma Team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

We are looking for an exceptional and committed nurse who possesses the necessary clinical skills and expertise to deliver a high standard of care to our Spinal Cord Injured patients (traumatic and non-traumatic).

The successful candidate will be fully supported by the Major Trauma Clinical Practitioner team, the Major Trauma Clinical Manager, Major Trauma Clinical Leads and the Spinal teams.

Main duties of the job

Working alongside nurses, AHPs and doctors from specialties from across the Trust, the post holder will be responsible for the assessment of SCI patients, the formulation of effective care plans, providing training and guidance to clinical teams, and the support of patients and their families throughout their pathway.

This is a demanding but very rewarding role, and the ideal candidate will have current nursing experience in spinal cord injury and will have the ability to function autonomously and decisively.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To work as an autonomous SCI Specialist Nurse.
2. To deliver a range of clinical and core nursing skills and interventions to meet the physiological and psychosocial needs of SCI patients.
3. To provide expert advice related to spinal cord injury and related treatment pathways.
4. Focus on improving patient care and service development.
5. To assess patients holistically, plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based care.
6. To provide specialist advice to patient families and carers and the wider multidisciplinary team.
7. To contribute to the development of the workforce through developing and delivering education and training.
8. To support service development and the ongoing development of the spinal cord injury pathway.
9. To participate in research activity and clinical audits in own specialist area.
10. To work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure the cohesive management of patients.
11. To act as a key worker for SCI patients as appropriate across the patient’s pathway.

Person specification

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria

12. Current NMC registration
13. Post registration qualifications/training relevant to the role
14. Evidence of study at Msc Degree
15. Successful completion of a leadership and development programme equivalent to the Band 6 Leadership and Development programme

Desirable criteria

16. Level 4 ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) or equivalent
17. NMP qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

18. SCI nursing experience at a senior level (Band 6 or above)
19. Able to perform clinical duties commensurate to the role
20. Ability to implement changes within nursing practice
21. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and Safeguarding and the relevance of these to practice
22. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
23. Knowledge of ethical issues
24. Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality
25. Knowledge of local/national Health and Social Care policy
26. Knowledge and experience of research

Desirable criteria

27. Experience of managing a clinical case load/ward
28. Experience in developing guidelines or protocols
29. Experience of training and coaching staff
