Roles and Responsibilities
In the 12-month Aerospace/Aeronautical/Mechanical Engineering Placement, you will gain hands-on experience across various teams and locations, contributing to the design, maintenance, and optimization of advanced jet engines.
While responsibilities vary depending on the team and location, you could engage in activities such as engine work scoping, tooling development, repair industrialization, cost optimization, and customer support. You could collaborate with cross-functional teams, apply lean principles, and develop technical expertise in areas like gas turbine fundamentals, engine architecture, and shop production methods. This placement offers structured training, mentorship, and opportunities to work on impactful projects that support GE Aerospace's mission of delivering world-class aviation solutions.
You will be guided by structured goals and objectives and will have responsibility to deliver on inspiring projects supported by your People Leader and team around you. We will guide you throughout the year to ensure you make the best of your GE Aerospace experience. Your People Leader will offer coaching and mentoring, and you will be provided with the opportunity to connect with other placement students across the UK.
Placement Options by Location
Cardiff:
* GE9X Product Support Engineering (PSE): Focused on pre-Engine in Service (EIS) readiness, overhaul shop preparation, tooling development, service bulletin updates, and technical support for customers. Students will gain exposure to the overhaul process, technical data collection, and lean project implementation.
* Engineering Team (Operations): Supporting jet engine overhaul for GE90 and CFM engine types, with responsibilities including engine work scoping, repair specification implementation, cost optimization, and production support. Students will develop customer relations and contribute to transitioning MRO processes to a digital environment.
* Customer Technology Programs (Strategic Powerplant Engineering): Collaborating with global teams to analyse incoming engine data, optimize work scope strategies, and reduce costs. Students will focus on leading indicators, cost-out initiatives, and supporting MRO operations.
* Prestwick GEnx Customer Technical Programs (CTP): Supporting the Strategic Powerplant Engineering team in tooling development, hardware condition review, repair industrialization, and work scope escalation management. Students will work with cross-functional teams to enhance serviceability limits and introduce new repair methods.

GE Aerospace Wales specializes in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of a range of commercial jet engines. The facility, based in Nantgarw, just north of Cardiff, occupies over 1.2 million square feet of workshop space and has two state-of-the-art aircraft engine test facilities, along with a significant repair capability known as Component Repair Wales. The site can provide maintenance, repair and overhaul services for a range of engine types, including the GE90-115B and the CFM56. As one of the largest commercial aircraft engine maintenance facilities in the world, with annual sales of over $2bn, the business works with over 90 customers worldwide, including Emirates, TUI, Lufthansa, Delta, United, ANA and British Airways. In 2017, the Wales site was selected as the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facility of choice for the GE9X; the project included a £5m investment from the Welsh Government to support the total £20m investment by the business to equip and upskill the facility for GE9X readiness.
The Wales team focuses on developing career opportunities for talented individuals through apprenticeships and work experience opportunities that build the next generation of technical, engineering and problem-solving talent. GE Aerospace Caledonian is a purpose-built engine overhaul facility near Glasgow Prestwick International Airport and is a centre of excellence for MRO of CF6 and GEnx engines. After each overhaul, engines undergo performance testing on site before returning to customers. Our team is passionate about training future engineers and leaders and supporting a diverse and inclusive culture. This placement is a pipeline to our Graduate Aerospace Engineer Programme based at Cardiff; graduate applications for current placement students open toward the end of the year, with a goal to secure a role before the placement ends, subject to achieving a 2:1 degree or above.

Qualifications/Requirements
* Currently studying an Engineering-related Bachelor's or integrated Master’s degree including Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, General Engineering or similar
* On course to achieve a 2:1 degree or above
* In your penultimate year of study and returning to education post placement
