Job Summary
Consultant Psychiatrist to lead the Chelmer Ward, an acute inpatient female ward (16 beds) at the Derwent Centre Mental Health Unit, Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, West Essex. The role involves clinical care of admitted patients, leadership of the multidisciplinary team, and collaboration with ward management to deliver an effective service.
Key Responsibilities
* Work closely with consultant colleagues to ensure that patient journey is smooth.
* Provide clinical leadership and liaise with general practitioners, psychiatrists, hospital specialists, statutory and non‑statutory agencies as needed.
* Commit to a multidisciplinary approach to care.
* Use evidence‑based interventions at all times.
* Respond to referrers/service users promptly and consistently regardless of referral source.
* Provide accurate diagnosis and timely interventions to meet recovery model requirements.
* Attend Mental Health Act assessments for relevant patients.
* Act as Responsible Clinician for inpatients, including attending Tribunals when necessary.
* Develop and maintain patient care programmes.
* Supervise junior and middle‑grade doctors.
* Participate in multidisciplinary teaching programmes.
* Contribute to collection of clinical information for service development and audit.
* Coordinate consultant cross‑cover for daytime hours (9 am‑5 pm, working days) and during annual, study or special leave.
* Engage in clinical governance and teaching activities.
* Contribute to day‑to‑day management and overall service development agenda with managerial and clinical colleagues.
Qualifications and Experience
• Full GMC registration and Specialist Register status. • Appropriate CCT or equivalent, or within six months of obtaining CCT on the date of appointment. • Proven experience in acute inpatient psychiatric care, preferably with female patients 18‑65 years. • Evidence of commitment to multidisciplinary and evidence‑based practice.
