Purpose of the role
To maintain and repair fixed plant equipment encompasses a range of responsibilities within the limits of one's expertise, all while maintaining meticulous records as directed by management. This role involves executing planned maintenance-and inspection tasks while keeping accurate documentation in line with management's requirements. Additionally, it
entails the crucial duty of inspecting and monitoring plant equipment in adherence to site protocols. Operating, inspecting, and up-keeping crushing and screening plants to meet site productivity targets is paramount. This position also requires expertise in starting up and shutting down equipment, optimizing throughput within plant capacity, and ensuring plant cleanliness as stipulated by management and site guidelines. Safety is paramount, requiring the safe and proper operation of machinery. Maintenance of static plant machinery is another responsibility, adhering to both manufacturer and
Heidelberg materials standards. Furthermore, flexibility is essential, as these duties may extend to other Heidelberg materials sites in the vicinity, with possible transport or traveling allowances provided for longer distances beyond the
regular commute.
Key accountabilities
* To maintain and repair static plant in a safe and efficient manner
* To maintain where required static plant in a good order physically, greasing, cleaning in accordance with the manufacturers and Heidelberg materials recommendations.
* To complete daily inspection sheets of the conditions of static plant when required.
* To report problems or defects of static plant to your line manager, supervisor.
* To operate plant & machinery in an energy efficient manner.
Reactive Maintenance & Fault Response
* Rapidly diagnose and repair breakdowns on critical mechanical equipment including:
* Bearings, pulleys, drums, gearboxes, conveyors, crushers, and screens.
* Minimise production downtime through safe, efficient fault resolution.
Component Replacement & Heavy Repairs
* Conduct or support planned and unplanned replacement of:
* Bearings (drive and non-drive end, spherical/roller types)
* Belt drums and conveyor components (lagging, shaft sleeves, etc.)
* Crusher components (jaw dies, hammers, liners, toggle plates)
* Use proper lifting, alignment, and torqueing procedures during replacement tasks.
* Complete post-installation checks (vibration, alignment, thermal).
Preventive Maintenance Support
* Carry out scheduled PM tasks during night shift windows (greasing, oil checks, tension adjustments).
* Assist with inspections to detect early signs of wear or misalignment.
* Ensure PM work orders are completed in the CMMS.
Health & Safety Compliance
* Apply all site safety standards, especially for night work:
* Confined space entry, working at height, hot work permits.
* Perform dynamic risk assessments and enforce safe work practices.
* Report near-misses, unsafe conditions, or potential failures.
Equipment Monitoring & Inspections
* Perform thermal, vibration, and visual checks on key mechanical assets.
* Identify and log deteriorating conditions such as:
* Bearing overheating
* Drum misalignment
* Early-stage crusher wear/fatigue
Support to Night Operations
* Work alongside the control room or production team to align repairs with production flow.
* Assist with plant startups, shutdowns, and configuration changes.
* Prioritize tasks based on plant needs and safety impact.
Spare Parts & Workshop Management
* Use and track critical spares for night repairs (e.g., bearing kits, crusher parts).
* Maintain workshop cleanliness and tool readiness.
* Flag low stock levels of essential components.
Communication & Shift Handover
* Complete detailed shift reports, including:
o Equipment worked on
o Parts used
o Outstanding issues for day crew
* Maintain clear logs in Check proof or physical handover sheets.
Essential Key Skills & Requirements
* Expertise in mechanical fitting, particularly with bearing and shaft assemblies, crusher internals, and conveyor mechanics.
* Ability to use hydraulic tools, bearing pullers, dial indicators, torque wrenches.
* Solid understanding of heavy fixed plant in quarrying or mining environments.
* Must work independently and safely with minimal supervision
* Good knowledge of health and safety regulations and Quarry regulations
* Carry out burning and welding operations and tasks
* Good timekeeping
