Go back Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust

Nurse (Paediatric Intensive Care / PICU)

The closing date is 26 May 2026

We are looking for a newly qualified or current Band 5 children's nurse to join our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

As the Lead Centre for Paediatric Intensive Care services for the West Midlands, we care for critically ill children from a wide range of specialties including cardiac, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), liver, medical, oncology, renal, surgery, neuro and trauma. This provides a unique opportunity to develop advanced clinical skills within a specialist paediatric critical care environment.

We are a 31 bedded unit with a friendly, dedicated and experienced team delivering paediatric and cardiac intensive care (PIC/CIC). Although we are a large department, we work within three smaller sub teams. This approach helps build strong team relationships, encourages collaboration and ensures staff feel supported in their day‑to‑day practice.

Working alongside experienced nurses and a wider multi‑disciplinary team (MDT), you will deliver high quality Level 3 intensive nursing care to critically ill children. The majority of our patients are cared for on a 1:1 nurse to patient ratio, enabling you to provide focused, individualised care whilst working closely with children and their families during some of the most important moments of their lives.

Main duties of the job

What you’ll bring:

* A newly qualified or current Band 5 children's nurse.
* A commitment to delivering high quality, compassionate nursing care for children and their families.
* Excellent communication and active listening skills, along with the ability to build supportive relationships with children, families and colleagues.
* A passion for family integrated care, working in partnership with parents and carers throughout the child's journey.
* Empathy, adaptability and resilience when supporting families through challenging situations.
* Critical care placement experience is not essential. We offer a comprehensive 12‑month educational foundation programme which runs alongside the Trust's Newly Qualified Nurse (NQN) preceptorship programme. This structured support will help you build confidence, develop your clinical skills and transition into paediatric critical care nursing.

What we’ll offer you:

We recognise that working in paediatric intensive care can be both rewarding and emotionally demanding. Your wellbeing is important to us and we are committed to supporting our staff. Within PICU we have a dedicated department Psychologist and wellbeing resources to ensure you feel supported in your role.

PICU is a 24 hour intensive care service and our nursing teams work a range of shifts including days, nights, weekends and bank holidays. We can support contracts of 30 hours per week, which is a requirement during the foundation programme year for newly qualified nurses.

Qualifications

* Children's Nursing Degree (BSc) or equivalent degree level nursing qualification.
* NMC registered or eligible to apply for NMC registration once qualified.
* Evidence of recent and ongoing professional development.

Knowledge and Nature of Experience

* Understanding of professional and current issues in children's nursing.
* Experience of working with children and young people.

Analytical and Judgement Skills

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Able to work well independently and as part of a team.
* Able to think quickly in a rapidly changing acute environment.

Professional and Specialist Knowledge

* Able to plan and prioritise daily workload to ensure high quality and safe care for children.
* Planning and organisational skills.

Personal Skills / Abilities and Attributes

* Communication / Relationship skills: Excellent communication skills, able to communicate effectively in challenging situations.
