Head of Nursing – Specialised Surgery Clinical Business Unit (CBU)
An exciting opportunity has arisen for the permanent post of Head of Nursing for the Specialised Surgery Clinical Business Unit (CBU). The Specialised Surgery CBU consists of Trauma & Orthopaedics, Major Trauma, Acute Rehab, Neurosurgery, Spines and Cardiothoracic.
Role Summary
The Head of Nursing will lead quality, safety and patient experience across the CBU; contribute to the Quality Improvement plan; develop nursing strategy; ensure implementation of national and local strategies; achieve service objectives; provide strong leadership; communicate complex information; deputise for the Care Group Director of Nursing; provide cross cover for other CBU Heads of Nursing as needed. The role is part of a flat triumvirate with the Clinical Business Unit Head of Operations and Medical Director, jointly responsible for national and local quality target achievement, people, organisational development, quality, finance and performance. The Head of Nursing will also be accountable for patient flow optimisation, escalation management, operational issue resolution, implementation of Trust policies, redesigning and streamlining pathways, and support staff across all departments.
Key Responsibilities
* Take lead on quality, safety and patient experience across the CBU.
* Contribute to the Quality Improvement plan and the wider Care Group and Corporate Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Agenda.
* Develop and implement nursing strategy for the CBU/portfolio, ensuring alignment with national and local strategies.
* Ensure achievement of service objectives within available resources.
* Provide strong leadership across the portfolio, ensuring appropriate systems and processes.
* Communicate complex and sometimes contentious information to large groups.
* Deputise for the Care Group Director of Nursing and provide cross-cover for other CBU Heads of Nursing as appropriate.
* Lead joint activities with the Head of Operations and Medical Director to meet national and local quality targets and deliver people and organisational development, quality, finance and performance objectives.
* Optimise patient flow and manage escalations effectively.
* Resolve operational issues, implement Trust policies and redesign pathways across both sites.
* Support staff across all departments.
Qualifications & Experience
A senior nurse with experience in a senior nursing leadership role and a proven track record of leading quality, safety and patient experience improvements. Experience in a multi-disciplinary and multi-specialty environment is required.
