Overview
Due to a retirement, we are recruiting a new member to our intensive care and acute medicine consultant teams. The post offers opportunities to work at the interface between these areas and to improve patient experience and outcomes. The successful candidate will be on the specialist register for acute and general internal medicine and intensive care medicine, or be expected to be so within six months of appointment. Clinical work will be delivered between Sunderland Royal and South Tyneside Hospitals, which have integrated critical care units providing level 3 care (18 and 6 beds respectively) and receive an unselected medical take.
Responsibilities
The posts are based at Sunderland Royal Hospital, with work (including out of hours) on this site and at South Tyneside District Hospital. Out of hours work will be based in critical care. The role includes leading digital transformation across both areas, with an expectation of experience in innovation and leadership engagement in digital healthcare. The postholder would also lead activities in research and education within the department.
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential:
* Primary medical qualification and full GMC registration.
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register for intensive care and acute medicine and general internal medicine, or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC.
* FFICM by examination or another postgraduate examination in intensive care medicine.
* Understanding of the NHS, clinical governance, and resource issues.
* Experience in digital healthcare, quality improvement activity, organisational and time management skills.
* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, healthcare workers and other agencies; good team working and interpersonal skills.
Desirable:
* Additional clinical skills beyond a CCT in ICU/acute medicine.
* Ability to train and supervise echocardiography.
* Current life support course (e.g. ALS) and management experience or certificates.
Personal attributes essential:
* Alignment with Trust values and flexible approach to service delivery.
* Commitment to professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities; effective communication with patients, relatives and colleagues.
* Understanding of Good Medical Practice (GMC) and demonstrated team working.
Teaching, Audit and Research
* Experience supervising junior medical staff and participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; ability to teach clinical/technical/practical skills.
* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice; involvement in quality improvement measures; experience of clinical research.
* Desirable: qualification in medical education; experience with multi-disciplinary audits and publications.
