The Head of Surgical Services is responsible for the clinical, professional, and financial outcomes, including the day-to-day operational management of the Theatres, Recovery, and Endoscopy units, with a key role supporting the development of Minor Ops. This role focuses on working with Consultants to ensure effective workflows and increasing theatre utilization. Additionally, the Head of Surgical Services supports the Endoscopy Lead in achieving JAG standards and developing the service. A crucial aspect of this role is fostering a positive, proactive, safety-first, patient-centered environment that meets CQC and AfPP standards and supports workforce development. The Head of Surgical Services also acts as the Medical Devices Safety Officer (MDSO).
Surgery is the key service at St John & St Elizabeth Hospital, which features six state-of-the-art Operating Rooms and recovery areas across two floors, as well as a dedicated Endoscopy room. The Head of Surgical Services oversees the two Minor Ops Rooms in Brampton House.

* Educated to degree level
* RN (General) Level 1 or Qualified Operating Department Practitioner
* Relevant post-basic qualification and experience, e.g., cardiac, elderly care, orthopedics medical course
* Experience in project management

What are the responsibilities of this Head of Surgical Services role?
* Provide professional leadership and management across all theatres, endoscopy, and recovery units, ensuring appropriate structures support nurses and theatre practitioners at all levels.
* Oversee management and use of equipment, processes, training, and staff competency within the Minor Procedures Suite in OPD.
* Ensure professional nursing standards and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
* Develop and evaluate policies and procedures aligned with patient safety, quality agendas, and hospital policies, fostering staff ownership.
* Implement systems for monitoring and auditing quality standards, complaints, incidents, and adverse events.
* Identify personal training objectives in line with the annual personal development plan, in collaboration with staff and management.
* Maintain skills and knowledge necessary to perform the duties of the Head of Surgical Services.
* Ensure purchasing decisions are cost-effective and clinically appropriate.
* Maintain a rolling program for equipment replacement and identify needs for new equipment aligned with consultant and specialty strategies.
* Manage trials of theatre equipment and consumables according to hospital policies and participate in tendering processes.
* Collaborate with the Director of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement to ensure compliance with medical device standards.
* Work with the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Team to review medical device incidents and promote reporting and learning.
