Directorate of Laboratory Medicine
Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Western General Hospital and Lauriston, Edinburgh
Gene Sciences Operational Science Manager Band 8A
NHS Lothian
Permanent position 37 hours per week (Monday – Friday)
Salary Scale band 8A: £62681 - £67,665 per annum

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified individual with proven management and organisational skills to apply for a permanent post within Gene Sciences (WGH - Clinical Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics and HMDS and RIE - Molecular Pathology) in Edinburgh. The post holder will be the sole Operational Science Manager for this area and this role is a management position and will be supporting/advising scientific colleagues and unlikely to perform any laboratory or analytic duties.

In 2025/26 it is anticipated that all laboratory teams working at the RIE and WGH will move to the Lauriston site, which will involve significant change management requiring support for all colleagues and Genetic services. Clinical Genetics is a patient facing service and this service will remain at the WGH site, so the successful candidate will work on a weekly basis across multiple sites.

Lothian Gene Sciences is part of the Scottish Strategic Network for Genomic Medicine (SSNGM), funded by National Services Division to provide Genetic and Molecular Pathology diagnostic testing in Scotland. Lothian is one of four centres (Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen) who work together in a regional model to fufil national requirements. Currently the SSNGM is reviewing its current operating model.

Applicants must be innovative, motivated and suitably experienced to manage pan Lothian Genetic services. The successful candidate must have HR experience and will be expected to support and implement, at an advanced level, HR policies and procedures. The Department is ISO 15189 UKAS accredited and there will be extensive changes to the QMS with Molecular Pathology joining Genetics under the same UKAS number. The successful candidate will be key supporting QMS changes in the next year. In addition there is a new LIMS being built to support Genetic services nationally and again it is essential for the successful candidate to be proficient in all MS packages and LIMS.

Working closely within an experienced Gene Science team, our ideal candidate will be HCPC registered, educated to MSc level or equivalent, have a formal management qualification or evidence management experience. A proven record of accomplishment within Training, Quality Management or Health & Safety would be a further advantage. Evidence of active participation in Continuing Professional Development is required.
