Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Worcester
Hours: 36.75 hours, Monday - Thursday 8am - 4.30pm, Friday 8am - 12.45pm
Salary: £40,000 per annum
Key Responsibilities of a Mechanical Design Engineer
* Product Design & Development
o Contribute to the design, development, and testing of mechanical components and assemblies.
o Collaborate with project teams to ensure designs meet customer specifications and regulatory requirements.
o Produce and maintain technical documentation, including specifications, drawings, operation manuals, and build/test procedures.
o Manage components and bills of materials within internal systems.
* Product Maintenance
o Refine existing product designs to improve performance, durability, and manufacturability.
o Develop solutions for component and system faults throughout the product lifecycle.
o Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation.
* Application Engineering
o Design mechanical solutions tailored to customer needs, ensuring designs meet functional and performance requirements.
* Sales, Manufacturing, Commissioning & Customer Support
o Work with the sales team to provide timely responses to customer queries.
o Support technical aspects of proposals, production builds, installations, and commissioning.
o Provide guidance during installations to ensure customer satisfaction.
* Professional Development & Collaboration
o Maintain and expand professional and technical knowledge through training, research, and professional networks.
o Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and engineering advancements.
o Collaborate with engineering colleagues and cross-functional teams to ensure successful project delivery.
o Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Key Skills of a Mechanical Design Engineer
* HNC/HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering.
* Preferably 5 years' experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer.
* Experience with PLM, FEA, and CFD tools.
* Hands‑on experience with CAM/CAE tools.
* Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD software for modelling, drawings, and analysis.
* Familiarity with engineering analysis tools and mathematical computing software including ANSYS, Matlab, Excel, and LabView.
* Strong understanding of mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, and materials science.
* Creativity, analytical skills, and technical writing abilities.
* Manufacturing experience is advantageous.
* Experience working as a Mechanical Design Engineer within high-performance engineering or rotating equipment environments would be highly beneficial.
Essential Criteria
* Experience designing water brake dynamometers, or alternatively, experience with high-speed rotating components up to 25,000 rpm.
* Active use of SolidWorks in current or recent employment.
* Strong knowledge of rotating machinery, mechanical systems, and high-speed component design.
* Understanding of manufacturing processes, tolerancing, and mechanical assembly techniques.
* Ability to produce accurate engineering drawings and technical documentation.
* Experience supporting products from concept through to manufacture and commissioning.
* Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments.
