An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Environmental Sustainability unit, working within the Natural Environment team based at the Civic Office. The ES-NE is responsible for co‑ordinating and driving activities to support carbon reduction and nature recovery across the city, in line with Doncaster’s Environment and Sustainability strategy. This role focuses on agro‑forestry projects, delivering initiatives to support agricultural land owners in increasing hedgerows, shelterbelts and tree planting schemes to support the delivery of Doncaster’s “One Million Trees” challenge.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Trees and Woodland Development Officer to increase the amount of tree cover in Doncaster by co‑ordinating planting projects on public and privately owned land. The role involves supporting and facilitating agro‑forestry projects of various types and sizes, applying appropriate technical and regulatory requirements to deliver works across all project management stages of planting. The postholder will also contribute to the development of a Trees, Woodland and Hedgerow Strategy for Doncaster.


General Role Description

The postholder will work to increase the amount of tree cover in Doncaster by co‑ordinating planting projects on public and privately owned land. They will facilitate woodland creation schemes and tree projects of various types and sizes, applying appropriate technical and regulatory requirements to deliver works across all project management stages of planting. The postholder will also provide professional advice and support to relevant stakeholders on planting schemes, promote the benefits of tree equity and canopy cover, and build positive partnerships within the Council, external organisations and the general public to deliver Doncaster’s “One Million Trees” challenge and future political initiatives. The postholder will contribute to the development of a Trees, Woodland and Hedgerow Strategy for Doncaster.


Duties and Responsibilities

1. Providing professional and technical advice on tree planting and woodland creation to stakeholders to ensure the best use of the planting site, best choice of tree species and a biosecure‑approved source of tree supplies.
2. Developing project documentation in line with technical, regulatory, and Health and Safety requirements to secure all projects as compliant with industry standards.
3. Identifying new tree planting opportunities through local and regional stakeholders to enable planting targets and increased canopy cover to be achieved.
4. Supporting stakeholders with developing tree planting plans, securing positive project engagement through multi‑partnership working as appropriate to deliver multifunctional benefits to the environment, society and the economy.
5. Building strong working relationships with colleagues and external partners to secure efficient and high‑quality project delivery.
6. Exploring sources of funding opportunities for planting projects and assisting colleagues and stakeholders with grant applications as required; this will enable the ongoing delivery of tree planting targets as part of the Council’s Environment and Sustainability Strategy.
7. Delivering project monitoring and data management, with regular reviewing of documentation to ensure accurate and robust project records for auditing.
8. Assisting with managing Doncaster’s Tree Register, to record all tree planting completed in Doncaster for internal and external progress reporting and wider project mapping.
