A bit about the role
As a Young Person’s Practitioner, you’ll play a vital role in delivering intensive, relationship‑based support to young people and their families.
You’ll work directly with them through one‑to‑one sessions, group work, parenting support, and family‑focused interventions—always tailored to their individual needs.
Your work will centre on preventing placement breakdown, supporting transitions back into the community, and helping families build practical strategies to manage challenges.
You’ll create safe, supportive spaces where young people feel heard and understood, while also empowering parents and carers to strengthen relationships at home.
You’ll collaborate closely with partner agencies, contribute to assessment and planning, and provide consistent, structured support that promotes stability and positive change.
This is a dynamic, hands‑on role where you’ll make a meaningful difference during some of the most important moments in a young person’s life.
About the Service
The Gael Og Intensive Support Service works with young people aged 11–18 and their families, offering one‑to‑one support, group work, parenting guidance, and family‑based interventions. The service is built on strong, trusting relationships and provides intensive support during times of crisis or significant challenge.
Our work focuses on two key aims:
* Preventing placement breakdown for young people living at home, in foster care, or in residential settings.
* Supporting smooth, positive transitions for young people returning to their local communities from out‑of‑area placements.
We work alongside families to provide practical and emotional support, helping parents, carers, and young people develop coping strategies that bring stability to the home.
By offering therapeutic, tailored interventions and working closely with partner agencies, we aim to promote positive outcomes and reduce the need for alternative care placements.
How you’ll help to create brighter futures
Some key responsibilities of a Young Person’s Practitioner role are to:
* Oversee, deliver, and evaluate individual work to support parents and young people through assessment and intervention.
* Deliver group programmes for children, young people, and parents to address issues affecting potential.
* Assess the family’s needs, promoting health and wellbeing through accredited activities and experiences.
* Prepare reports for the Child’s Plan, present at multi‑agency meetings, and collaborate with partners to achieve positive outcomes.
* Manage distressed behaviour and provide effective support to young people and their families.
Let’s talk about you
* Bring an open‑minded, non‑judgemental approach, recognising that the young people and families you’ll support may be going through incredibly vulnerable moments in their lives.
* Work flexibly, offering support when young people need it most — including some evenings and weekends.
* Hold a driving licence and have access to a car. The role involves travelling across a wide rural area in line with service needs, with reasonable adjustments available under the Equality Act where required.
* Work collaboratively with colleagues across Gael Og to help ensure Action for Children’s values and goals are reflected in everything we do.
Diversity, equality and inclusion
We work hard to create an inclusive environment. One where individuality is celebrated and where everyone feels valued and supported. Because when we come together, with skills like yours, we’re capable of amazing things.
