Overview

Highway Design Engineer
My client is looking for a proactive and motivated Highway/Infrastructure Design Engineer to join their Engineering Design Team, based in either London or Manchester. This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in a wide variety of high-profile and challenging projects, delivering innovative solutions across highways and infrastructure.

The role is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, enjoys problem-solving, and wants to make a real impact on the built environment. With clear scope for career development and progression, you will also have the opportunity to mentor junior team members and play a key role in shaping the technical excellence of the team.


Responsibilities

* Produce concept, feasibility, and detailed construction designs for highway and drainage infrastructure schemes.
* Prepare planning stage layouts to support transport planning submissions.
* Develop 3D designs and outputs using Civil 3D, in line with DMRB, Manual for Streets, and project-specific standards.
* Create sketch concepts, drawings, and general arrangements to recognised design standards.
* Assist with the preparation of contract documents and technical specifications.
* Undertake inspections, surveys, and reporting, including site supervision of projects.
* Provide coaching and guidance to junior engineers and CAD technicians.
* Manage small projects or project elements, ensuring delivery within time and budget.
* Contribute to commercial and technical project management to support efficient delivery.
* Develop innovative design solutions that add value for clients.
* Stay up to date with industry developments, sharing knowledge and contributing to the technical growth of the team.


Required Skills & Competencies

* Strong technical background in detailed design for highway, drainage, and infrastructure projects.
* Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and related software (e.g., AVT, KeySign/Post).
* Experience with Section 278/38 highway approvals and Section 104/106 water industry agreements.
* Good working knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets, and other relevant standards.
* Awareness of DCG drainage guidance and Building Regulations.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a dynamic team.
* Commercial awareness and an understanding of project delivery requirements.


Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

* Minimum 3 years' experience in highway/infrastructure design.
* HNC with extensive experience, or BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering (or related discipline).
* Membership of CIHT, ICE, or an equivalent professional body.

Desirable:

* MEng in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
* Ability to use micro-drainage software.
* Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards professional accreditation.
