Overview
Two full‑time consultant posts in the Plastic Surgery Department with a major interest in Limb Reconstruction surgery. The successful applicants will join a team of plastic surgeons with an interest in Orthoplastic, Lower Limb and Hand surgery that treat adult and paediatric patients, and contribute to the trauma and elective workload for these sub‑specialties. The established Ortho-plastics team provides high standards of care to acute and chronic extremity cases, treating over 200 acute adult and 15–20 severe injuries in children each year. The successful candidate will join the existing Orthoplastics and Hand team of consultants: Mr Thomas Wright (Service Lead), Mr Umraz Khan, Mr Thomas Chapman, Wing Commander George Wheble, Miss Emily West and Mr James Henderson.
Responsibilities
Main duties of the job include working within the Plastic Surgery Department, which covers a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions including skin cancer, hand surgery, lower limb trauma, breast reconstruction, head and neck malignancy, sarcoma, burns service and laser therapy. Combined clinics are held in association with other specialists including head and neck surgery, Ortho-Plastics, oncologists and dermatology. Specialist clinics include hands, pigmented lesions, sarcoma and breast reconstruction. There are dedicated plastics and burns general anaesthetic operating theatres and three local anaesthetic operating theatres, with 24‑hour access to general emergency theatres where out of hours trauma cases are undertaken. The postholders will be provided with secretarial support and office accommodation, which will be shared with other members of the consultant team. There will be an on‑call commitment to delivering an emergency adult and paediatric plastic surgery service.
Requirements
Essential
* Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent (for non‑UK applicants)
* Maintain Full registration with the GMC
* Must have CCT in Plastic Surgery and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment
Desirable
* Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MS)
* 6–12 microsurgery fellowship in an approved UK or overseas position
* Experience with Orthoplastics and Limb and Hand Trauma
Experience
* Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
* Minimum of 6 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent
* Training in diagnosis and treatment of routine plastic surgery conditions
* Experience, training and interest in Orthoplastic and Microvascular Reconstruction
* Experience and training in surgical management of common, non‑specialised conditions in children, including trauma
* Management of hand trauma
Desirable experience
* 6–12 microsurgery fellowship in an approved UK or overseas position
* Experience with Orthoplastics and Limb and Hand Trauma
Knowledge
* Evidence of recent CME/reasonable training progression at this stage of career
* Experience in audit projects and written up
* Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
* Knowledge of political context within which we operate
